[01] Turkey threatens with response the decision to deploy S-300s in Crete

According to Anatolia Agency (13:35 hours, 10.2.99), the Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that the decision for the deployment of S-300 missiles on Crete was not a ``very rationalist policy'' and that Turkey never leaves a threat without response.

Responding to a question during his weekly press conference, Sermet Atacanli, the Deputy Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, recalled that Foreign Minister Ismail Cem had said in a press conference held through the end of December 1998 that the issue of S-300s cant be accepted as a matter of bargaining.

``The deployment of S-300 missiles on Crete will add a new problem into the existing complicated relations between Turkey and Greece. Thus it cant be accepted that this policy of Greeks and Greek-Cypriots is very accurate and rationalist,'' Atacanli claimed.

Atacanli also alleged that those steps would give rise to a new tense atmosphere in Eastern Mediterranean.

``Turkey will absolutely give response to such kind of threats against her. Such efforts of Greek-Cypriots wont bring peace on Cyprus,'' Atacanli threatened.

[02] Demirel: ``New Cyprus solution can only be confederation''

According to Anatolia Agency (16:55 hours, 10.2.99), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel received on Wednesday Kamil Raif, the chairman of the ``Association of Turkish Cypriots Development Platform'', and the accompanying delegation.

Addressing the meeting, Kamil Raif said that they had arrived in Turkey with a delegation including jurists as the issue of ``Harmonization of TRNC Law With Turkish Law'' would be discussed in a symposium to be held on Thursday.

President Demirel said that there were some obstacles in front of the pseudostates development. Stating that the embargo constituted one of those obstacles, Demirel said that ``the TRNC state and nation were seemed as they were isolated from the world''.

``We are aware of the troubles created by this. We are seeking the ways to compensate these. The Turkish Cypriots, just like their brothers in Anatolia, are continuing their struggle'', he said.

Pointing out that he was following the developments in the pseudostate with close interest, Demirel said: ``We haven`t yet found a solution which can be accepted by the world. But, there is a TRNC state on Cyprus. The conditions had been changed especially after the attitude of Europe. A new solution can only be a confederation. That is to say, the TRNC continues to administrate herself. It will be good if the conditions for living together on the island with others are developed in accordance with agreements. This is very crucial.

The Turkish Cypriots should continue their efforts, especially the unity. The heroism of our kinsmen in the TRNC has reached this level with the determination of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish Armed Forces. This is a very considerable and important result. We will make it stronger and we will never weaken it''

[03] Demirel: Water pipeline to Cyprus by end of year

According to Anatolia Agency (8:01 hours, 10.2.99), Turkish President Suleyman Demirel said on Tuesday that the project to transport water to the occupied area with pipeline will be concluded by the end of this year or next year.

Addressing a meeting with a delegation of the Anamur Municipality Demirel recalled that water was transported to the occupied are with balloons earlier, adding that ``this time there will be pipeline instead of balloon.''
