[01] Denktash comments on Miller meeting

According to Anatolia Agency (09:51 hours, 10/10/98), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash who is currently in the US in order to attend the annual meetings of the Assembly of the Turkish American Associations (TADA) in Washington D.C., claimed on Saturday, ``Glafcos Clerides, the leader of Greek Cypriot side administration, has promised every one to correct his mistake of S-300 missiles. We will see whether he will keep his promise or not.'' Addressing the journalists, Denktash reminded that he held contacts with Thomas Miller, the US Special Coordinator for Cyprus, and explained ``the reasons of the confederation proposal.'' Describing his meeting with Miller as ``useful'', Denktash said that he wants Washington ``to make the Greek Cypriots realize the concrete facts.'' Responding to a question about the Russian made S-300 missiles Denktash outrageously claimed that the Greek Cypriots purchase weapons from Russia ``with the stolen money from the Russian mafia.'' Noting that there is a situation on the island effecting the US interests in the region, Denktash claimed ``the Greek Cypriot side has not brought only Russia to Cyprus. The financial aids which were sent to Russia by the US via the International Monetary Fund (IMF) flow to Cyprus as black money. And the Greek Cypriot side purchase weapons by using this money. The real problem, real threats on the island is this.'' Meanwhile Thomas Miller told the reporters that they have scrutinized the latest developments on the island at the meeting which he described as positive and productive.

[02] Denktash asks US ``to act fairly'' on Cyprus issue

According to TRT Television Network (09:00 hours, 9/10/98) Rauf Denktash has asked the United States ``to act fairly with regard to the Cyprus issue.'' Denktash attended the Turkish-US Associations Assembly in Washington. Addressing the meeting, Denktash remarked that he does not expect Washington to recognize the ``TRNC'' because of the Greek Cypriot- Greek lobby, but the United States must not obstruct those who want to recognize the pseudostate. Also speaking at the meeting, former US coordinator for Cyprus Nelson Ledsky said that no one should expect the United States to recognize the ``TRNC.'' Washington Times commentator Bruce Fain, who differed in this regard, in his speech referred to Denktash as ``president'' and to President Glafcos Clerides as Mr. Clerides, TRT reported.

[03] Eroglu claims Syria, Greece, Cyprus cooperate against Turkey

According to Anatolia Agency (14:21 hours, 9/10/98) Devris Eroglu, so- called prime minister of the pseudostate, said on Friday that the pseudostate for a long time ``followed the hostile attitudes of Syria with admonition, despite all the goodwill of Turkey which respects the friendly relations and territorial integrity of all countries.'' In a written statement, Eroglu said that ``the Syrian administration, which has expansionism at the core of its official policy, sheltered the separatist terrorist organization and was in cooperation with all the circles that are against Turkey.'' Alleging that Syria got support from Greece and the Cyprus Government, Eroglu claimed ``this relation is also carried out at an economic and military level against Turkey.'' Eroglu said that ``cooperation between Greece, which aimed at forming an Orthodox arch including Serbia, Russia and Armenia via Greece, and Syria, which has a predominantly Muslim population, was interesting.'' Eroglu claimed that ``Turkeys goodwill was exploited,'' adding that ``Turkey has the right of self-defense to protect her territorial integrity and interests.'' He said ``we advise the concerned circles not to interpret Turkeys patience as a weakness and we also advise them to put an end to the cooperation with the separatist terrorist organization.''

[04] Serdar Denktash: ``Morphou not to be given to Greeks''

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (15:30 hours, 11/10/98) Serdar Denktash, Democratic Party leader, so-called state minister and deputy prime minister, has reacted to the statements made by President Clerides and Mr. Kasoulides, the Foreign Minister.

In a statement to illegal BRT (Bayrak Radio Television), Denktash claimed that ``the territory of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is an indivisible unity'', further claiming that the pseudostate is ``sovereign.'' He continued: ``Morphou is within the borders of the TRNC and will remain so.'' Denktash said that the Cyprus Government ``is inciting its people and sending them to the TRNC border in a bid to keep alive the illusions of returning to the north and establishing sovereignty over the entire island.'', adding: ``We hope that the Greek Cypriot leadership will renounce its adventurist stand, opt for common sense, accept the realities on the island, and respond positively to the confederation proposal that will create cooperation opportunities between the two states.'' Alleging that the confederation proposal submitted by Rauf Denktash is an important step on the path to a solution, Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriot side, by maintaining its current stand, ``is playing with fire.'' Denktash further criticized the foreign parliamentarians who participated in yesterdays demonstration in the occupied Morphou region. Reiterating his claim that ``Morphou is TRNC territory,'' Denktash concluded: ``Let the Greek Cypriots keep on dreaming about Morphou. We shall, in the meantime, channel our investments to Morphou and further develop the region. We shall not give Morphou to anyone.''

[05] Turks react to EU participation in Greek Cypriot demonstration

According to Anatolia Agency (14:16 hours, 11/10/98), Turkish Cypriots reacted to the participation of parliamentarians from the European Union (EU) countries in a demonstration held by a group of Greek Cypriots who walked till the so-called border in the occupied Morphou area wanting to ``return to their homes.'' The ``National Resolution Platform in TRNC'' said that ``Greek Cypriots are forgetting the existing border on Cyprus.'' Huseyin Alaya, the chairman of the ``Platform'', said that ``the sovereignty border of the TRNC state starts at the point where the borders of the Greek Cypriot administration end.'' Alleging that if a political solution which is based on ``two sovereign states'' is reached on Cyprus, then Greek Cypriots right to enter freely to the occupied part of the island can come to the agenda, Alasya claimed that the EU representatives who participated in the demonstration held by Greek Cypriots ``dont serve peace by their acts.''

[06] Turkeys foreign debt repayment since January

According to Anatolia Agency (12:59 hours, 8/10/98) Turkey has repaid a total of 8 billion 962.9 million US dollars in foreign debts since the beginning of this year.

The Central Bank data shows that the Treasury repaid 7 billion 336.2 million US dollars; the Central Bank repaid 273.7 million US dollars; the Ministry of National Defense and the Defense Industry repaid one billion 177.1 million US dollars and the Defense Fund repaid 467.2 million US dollars in foreign debts between 1 January and 10 June 1998.

Meanwhile, a total of 360.2 million US dollars in foreign debts were repaid within the first week of October.

The Central Bank data shows that the Treasury repaid 355.2 million US dollars; the Central Bank repaid 2.5 million US dollars; the Ministry of National Defense and the Defense Industry repaid 2.5 million US dollars and the Defense Fund repaid 467.2 million US dollars in foreign debts between 1 and 8 October 1998.

The foreign debt payment was 1 billion 346.7 million US dollars in January; 916 million US dollars in February; 785.8 million US dollars in March; 765.8 million US dollars in April and 621.1 million US dollars in May; 1 billion 165.9 million US dollars in June; 1 billion 242.8 million US dollars in July; 860.9 million US dollars in August and 897.6 million US dollars in September 1998.

[07] Denktash claims confederation has generated support in USA

According to Turkish Daily News (9/10/98) Rauf Denktash has expressed optimism over the American attitude towards his confederation proposal. ``In New York, I had meetings with a number of diplomats. I saw that they are evaluating our proposals in a constructive way. In fact, some of them have said that this has broken up the stalemate. Now there is a chance for the talks to begin, naturally on a different (state-to-state) level,'' Denktash said, in remarks to the Turkish Daily News.

Denktash was speaking in Washington where he arrived after a number of meetings in New York.

When asked why, if President Glafcos Clerides position has not changed, Denktash thinks the condition of stalemate could change, Denktash inter alia responded: ``The stalemate has opened a chance for our proposal for a confederal settlement.'' As for when the Turkish Cypriot side can expect some kind of response from Greek Cypriots, Denktash said, ``I dont know. I dont expect anything very quickly. Well see.'' Commenting on his meeting with Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special presidential envoy to Cyprus, Denktash said that he was still interested and still in the show. ``He knows and appreciates that the time has not come for a face-to-face meeting between Clerides and I. He also is supporting Secretary General Kofi Annans initiative for shuttle diplomacy in the meantime,'' Denktash added. When asked how Holbrooke feels about the confederation proposal, Denktash said: ``Well, he did not applaud it but he did not reject it. Of course, it is not for him to accept or reject it.'' Commenting on his schedule in Washington, Denktash said that his purpose was to have meetings with the American press and inform them on the policies of the Turkish Cypriot side, particularly the confederation proposal. Denktash said that a number of meetings will take place around town with think-tanks as well as the press.

[08] Turkish Cypriots claim EU continues to err on Cyprus issue

According to Anatolia Agency (15:42 hours, 8/10/98), the so-called foreign affairs and defense ministry of the pseudostate, has claimed that with its decision to start negotiations with Cyprus on 10 November, ``the EU has shown that it is continuing to make efforts to permanently divide Cyprus.'' A written statement issued by the ``ministry'' claims that ``with its latest step, the EU shows that it prefers to reinforce its mistakes regarding Cyprus rather than help toward a peaceful solution on the island.'' It adds:

``This situation confirms once again the validity of our confederation proposal which aims to solve the Cyprus problem by means of an agreement based on mutual consensus and absolute equality and which brings a new opening to the EU issue. The TRNC people and government have been protecting their equality and sovereign rights with determination for years. With the same determination, our people will never allow the Greek Cypriot-Greek duo to use the EU in order to indirectly fulfill its known aims.''

[09] Brucella and echinococcus in the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (10.10.98) the so-called Veterinary Department of the pseudostate has announced that an organized fight is being waged against brucella.

The so-called director of the department, Kamil Aktolgali, has declared that within the next five years brucella and echinococcus will be eradicated in the occupied area.

Aktolgali said that the checking up of cattle for brucella has been completed. 27312 animals were tested and 8 animals in every thousand were found to be carriers of brucella. He said that these animals were slaughtered. Testing for brucella in goats and sheep, said Aktolgali, will start next month.

Aktolgali said that checking for echinococcus in dogs continues and will end soon. He said that for both projects they envisage a five year period at the end of which both diseases will be eradicated.
