[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash: Resistance to continue until Cyprus issue solvedAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 12.3.98), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has claimed that he is not defying the world but is taking a stand against injustice. He noted that the "resistance" will continue until the Cyprus problem is solved and the Turkish Cypriots attain their rights. The Turk Bank Stock Exchange Center was inaugurated by Denktash yesterday. Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Denktash referred to a Reuter report that said Denktash is continuing his obstinacy. He said that the issue is being personalized and that he represents 90 percent of the population. Denktash clarified the 90-percent issue by saying that recent polls have shown that 45 percent of the population believe that the Turkish Cypriots cannot join the EU before an agreement is reached and that another 45 percent believe that they cannot joint the EU prior to Turkey's membership. Denktash added that the current political stand is supported by 90 percent of the population. Denktash insisted that the time has come for the world to see the realities, adding that certain sectors are not aware of what the EU means and symbolizes. Denktash said: "The EU means free circulation, free settlement, and free property purchase. The EU is built on these principles. If we get on this train before we are recognized as the TRNC, before our sovereignty is acknowledged, and before we attain the right to place certain valid reservations on these issues, then we will have lost our right to express reservations. Under those conditions, whatever Clerides says will be implemented". Denktash warned that accession to the EU will grant all Greek Cypriot refugees the right to return to their homes, there will be no property exchange, and Hellenism will be victorious in Cyprus. [02] Turkish paper reports on new US plan for CyprusAccording to daily TURKIYE (12.3.98) the United States' Cyprus plan was made clear during Thomas Miller's meeting with Rauf Denktash the other day. According to the plan, which has taken the Dayton agreement -- where US Presidential Emissary Richard Holbrooke played the role of mentor -- as a model, the federation to be formed in Cyprus will remain in balance because US soldiers will be stationed along the buffer zone. The plan, which will begin following a reduction in the number of Turkish soldiers stationed on the island, will be officially proposed in April, by Holbrooke, in the name of US President Clinton. While Holbrooke's assistant Thomas Miller has reportedly said that UN soldiers have to be withdrawn from the region, Turkey is said to be warmly disposed toward the plan. According to the report, Denktash, who has decided not to meet the EU representatives on Cyprus, said: "The United States told Europe not to exert pressure regarding the entry of the TRNC into the EU together with the Greek Cypriots".[03] Cem, Etkin exchange documents to set up "Association Council"According to TRT (18:00 hours, 12.3.98) Taner Etkin, so-called minister of foreign affairs and defense of the pseudostate, arrived in Ankara yesterday and exchanged with the Turkish authorities the documents of approval of an "agreement" under which Turkey and the "TRNC" will establish an "Associaiton Council".Speaking at the signing ceremony, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem stressed that the aim of establishing the "Association Council" is to raise relations between Turkey and the pseudostate to the highest level. "Turkey's aim is to reinforce the TRNC's power and character as an independent and sovereign state with the help of this Association Council. We want to put an end to the unjust allegations and practices and the anachronistic economic pressures that are leveled at the TRNC from outside. We expect a lot from this Association Council in ensuring that the TRNC receives what is its right and that it exists where it has the right to exist", Cem said. Asked if the exchange of documents was deliberately done on the same day as the European Conference, Cem replied that it is merely a coincidence. He said: "The government's stand relates only to the essence. We do not need to create formalistic associations." [04] Talat accuses Denktash of double standard in Altinisik caseAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11:30 hours, 12.3.98) Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat has described as a double standard the stand adopted by Rauf Denktash regarding the dismissal of Ali Ozkan Altinisik, "minister of labour and housing".In a written statement he issued, Talat recalled Denktash's statement that he had removed Altinisik from "office" at Eroglu's request and that "constitutionally" he had no alternative. Talat recalled that while the CTP was in power, Denktash refused to endorse the appointment of certain "ministers". He pointed out that Eroglu's reason for requesting Altinisik's dismissal was not his poor performance in solving housing and social security problems but his use of "public funds" for personal and party interests. [05] DP withdraws from pseudo-governmentAccording to KIBRIS (13.3.98) the so-called coalition partner Democrat Party's Central Committee has decided to withdraw from the so-called government, because one of the so-called DP ministers, the so-called minister of labour and settlement, Ali Ozkan Altinisik, was dismissed by so- called Prime Minister, Dervish Eroglu, of NUP (National Unity Party).DP leader Serdar Denktash accused Eroglu of deliberately creating a "government" crisis. The DP Central Committee has decided to leave the final decision of withdrawing from the "government" to the extraordinary meeting of the DP's general congress to be held on 29 March, 1998, just two days before the opening of the Cyprus-EU membership negotiations. (MY) [06] Terrorist organization threatens with retaliation over the case of Kenan Akin and Erdal EmanetAccording to KIBRIS (13.3.98) the Turkish terrorist organization, the Turkish Revenge Brigade (TURK INTIKAM TUGAYI-TIT), in an e-mail message through the Internet warned the Greeks about the dire consequences if they bring Kenan Akin and Erdal Emanet, the two people who in cold-blood shot and killed Solomos Solomou in Dheryinia, before justice. In a strong-worded message the TIT threatened to retaliate in case these two murderers, who are on Interpol's stop list, are brought before justice. (MY) [07] Feissel meets DenktashAccording to KIBRIS (13.3.98) the UN Secretary General's deputy Special Representative to Cyprus, Gustave Feissel, had a meeting yesterday with Rauf Denktash. After the meeting Feissel said that he is preparing the ground for Cordovez's forthcoming visit in March, 1998.
