[01] DENKTASH REPLIES TO PRESIDENT CLERIDES' STATEMENTS IN INDIA

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1130 hours, 12/2/97) Rauf Denktash has claimed that during his contacts in India, President Glafkos Clerides once again resorted to lies and made use of a very unjust report prepared by former UN Secretary General Boutros-Ghali that said that the Turkish Cypriot side has no political will.

Denktash met with the Administrative Council members of the so- called Turkish Cypriot Parliamentary Union and conferred with them for some time. In a statement at the meeting, Dentktas alleged: I do not know what Clerides has to gain from these lies. Boutros-Ghali changed the unjust details in that report and wrote the truth. Clerides now avoids that truth and continues to use this wrong report, this report that was unjust to us. In other words, he continues to be unjust to the Turkish Cypriots.

He claimed that the Cyprus problem can be solved and peace achieved on the basis of a unification based on the existence of two peoples, two governments, and two states. Denktash stated that without such a basis the Cyprus problem will not advance, threatening that this would be tantamount to the permanent division of the island.

[02] TURKISH SPOKESMAN VIEWS RIFKIND STATEMENT ON TENSION WITH GREECE

According to Anatolia agency (1620 hours, 12/2/97) Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Omen Akbel claimed on Wednesday that Turkey was not responsible for the tension erupted between Turkey and Greece.

Responding to a question about British Foreign Minister Malcolm Rifkind's statements in BBC radio 4 channel that a clash may erupt in the Aegean, Akbel recalled that Greek Foreign Minister Theodhoros Pangalos had told a statement to a Greece newspaper at the beginning of February that he opposed to any kind of negotiation on the Aegean issue and ready to challenge with Turkey in Cyprus.

Akbel reiterated Turkey' s determination to preserve its rights adding that ` there is no change in our views to solve problems through peaceful ways.'

He added that Turkey still favors taking up Turkish-Greek relations in a comprehensive way and through dialogue.

Akbel said the Turkish side always invited Greece and the Greek Cypriot side to the negotiation table to discuss the Cyprus issue.

He expressed his wish that common sense will prevail in Cyprus soon and the hope that peace efforts would be speeded up within the framework of the UN secretary general's goodwill mission and specified parameters.

[03] ETKIN ASKS UN TO CONDEMN GREEK CYPRIOT ARMAMENT EFFORTS

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (0600 hours, 12/2/97) Taner Etkin, so-called foreign affairs and defense minister of the pseudostate, has sent a letter to UN secretary General Kofi Annan asking the United Nations to clearly condemn the Greed Cypriot armament efforts.

The letter, whose contents the spokesman of the UN Secretariat General disclosed to international press organisations, is dated 30 January 1997.

Etkin claimed that the United Nations and third countries involved in the Cyprus issue should clearly condemn the Greek Cypriots. Alleging that the Greek Cypriots have clarified their intentions through their recent purchase of missiles from the Russians, Etkin called on the international community to put a stop to these `'dangerous'' Greek Cypriot activities, as he called them.

[04] TGNA DELEGATION IN THE OCCUPIED AREA

According to ORTAM (15.2.97), a Turkish Grand National Assembly's (TGNA) Foreign Affairs Committee delegation headed by True Path Party Istanbul deputy Sedat Agaoglu will be arriving in the occupied area today.

The 12 member-delegation will stay three days in the occupied area and will leave on 16 February.
