    [01] DENKTASH: DEMILITARIZATION A "FANTASY"

According to illegal Bayrak Radio and Television (6/2/97), Rauf Denktash issued a statement in connection with the incident that allegedly took place yesterday in occupied Louroudjina area. Turkish Cypriots claim that a special team of five men dressed in military uniform tried to steal the pseudostate's "flag" as well as the turkish flag from where they are hoisted and that a clash broke out when they were detected with night-vision equipment.

He recounted that after the August incidents President Clerides proposed to hold talks if they agree to demilitarization. Denktash claimed that demilitarization can be effected only after achieving peace, without diluting Turkey's guarantees.

He claimed: "Demilitarization is a fantasy. Peace must be achieved before it can be realized."

He then made the rediculous allegation that the Greek Cypriots have an organization in Limassol that rewards anyone who steals the Turkish flag, or steals anything else from the Turkish Cypriot side.

Denktash said that there is no room for concern that war may break out in Cyprus because of such incidents.

Meanwhile, according to TRT (1600 hours, 6/2/97), Tansu Ciller, Turkish foreign minister and deputy prime minister, asked to comment on the alleged incident, said:

"We fully approve of the cool-headed attitude of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in this regard. The safety of the Turkish Cypriot people and the borders of the TRNC are guaranteed by the Turkish Republic." EF/MP
