[01] Sung-Joo to hand over letter by UN Secretary General to Turkish officials
According to KIBRIS (6.2.97) the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will be
asking Turkey's support for the resumption of the intercommunal talks in
Cyprus.
According to information received from Ankara, reports KIBRIS, the
UN Secretary General's Special Representative to Cyprus Han Sung-Joo, who
will be in Istanbul today for talks with the Turkish officials, will be
delivering a letter from Kofi Annan to the Turkish officials. (MY)
[02] Denktash repeats threats for "reciprocal steps"
According to KIBRIS (6.1.97) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in
answer to President Clerides' press conference the other night, repeated
his known views and allegations.
He claimed that President Clerides was not telling the truth as
regards the air base currently under construction and declared that: "One
should not forget that to every step taken by the Greek Cypriots,
reciprocal steps will be taken".
As regards the Turkish settlers brought over to the occupied area
with a view to changing the demographic structure of the island, Denktash
alleged that in the occupied area there are no settlers but citizens.
"Clerides should not occupy himself with this issue", he alleged. (MY)
