    NEWS ITEMS

[01] Denktash on the Turkish Cypriots who want to work to the free areas

KIBRIS (5.9.96) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has alleged that the Greek Cypriots are trying to make the Turkish Cypriots who want to work in the free areas accept slavery conditions and make them bow.

Denktash claimed that these conditions are: "To bow to the Greek Cypriots; Not to defend the rights of the Turkish Cypriots; When Enosis is mentioned to stand up and praise and approve; Accept slavery in order to work." "These conditions", Denktash alleged, "are natural for the Greek Cypriots.". (MY)

[02] Soyer said to be invited by British Foreign Office

Serhat Incirli, KIBRIS's London correspondent (5.9.96), reports that the General Secretary of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Ferdi Sabit Soyer, has been "officially" invited to the British Foreign Office to hold contacts with the British and Irish politicians regarding the Cyprus problem and European Union relations.

Incirli adds that Soyer, accompanied by the chairman of the RTP's London Solidarity Association Ilter Kilic, held talks for three days with the British and Irish politicians.

Incirli points out that the British government has not until now invited "TRNC government" members to the UK. He says that President Clerides has been invited to Britain by the British Government as the President of the Cyprus Republic. "It did not extend the same treatment to the `TRNC President'" points out Incirli.

[03] Akinci: We have to live together in peace

ORTAM (5.9.96) reports that the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) leader Mustafa Akinci paid a visit yesterday to the mixed village of Pyla and to the village of Pergamon, within the British Base area in Larnaca. He met with the Turkish Cypriots who have become unemployed following the barbaric killings of the two unarmed Greek Cypriot demonstrators by Turkish occupation troops and terrorist Grey Wolves gangs during the Dherinia incidents.

Akinci, speaking to the unemployed Turkish Cypriots, who expected some kind of interest on the part of the occupation regime about their situation, said: "History and geography have imposed on the Turkish and Greek Cypriots to exist together on this island. We have to learn to live with this reality and to live together in peace. The incidents in Dherinia were bad. The Greek Cypriot administration's and the Greek Cypriot police's tolerance have important responsibility regarding these events. It was also very wrong to bring idealists from Turkey here. We feel great sorrow over the two deaths. However, whatever has happened has happened, from now on we have to act reasonably. We want Greek and Turkish Cypriots in Pyla to continue to live in peace and tranquility. We did not come here to provoke, but to do everything possible to help the situation return back to normal."

[04] Turkish Cypriots do not accept an EU representative

KIBRIS (5.9.96) reports that the so-called Foreign and Defence Minister of the pseudostate Taner Etkin, commenting on French Minister Responsible for European Affairs Michel Barnier's statement that the EU will appoint a representative to Cyprus with wider powers, said: "It is out of the question for us to accept the EU to intervene in the Cyprus problem through a representative to Cyprus with wider powers."

Etkin was commenting on a recent interview given by Barnier to a private TV station in Cyprus. (MY)

[05] Illegal "Turkish Freedom Brigade" attacks Denktash

HALKIN SESI (5.9.96) reports that the illegal organization. The Turkish Freedom Brigade (OTT), which has been silent for sometime, is on the scene again, with a statement posted to the people regarding the Dherinia incidents. The OTT in its statement is strongly critical of Rauf Denktash and the Association of the Turkish Cypriot Fighters. It brands Denktash a free-mason who colludes with President Clerides.

The statement reads: "In recent days we are experiencing the border provocations of the blood-thirsty Greek Cypriots. We know why this is being done. However, it raises a question. Where did they take the power from to come and cross the border, since they knew that the borders could not be crossed?

The answer to this question passes through the door left open during the bilateral negotiations by the other mason member, who is, like Clerides, a member of the free-masonic lodge. Provocations will bring about the non-solution. Motherland Turkey will be put into difficulty. Thus it will be rendered difficult to exert pressure on Rauf Denktash. Denktash's `Megali Idea', the presidential system, and Clerides's entry into the EU will be thus realized. The reign of the Denktash House will continue and he will be able to manipulate the Turkish Cypriots as he pleases.

The `pseudo-resistence' of the Association of the Turkish Cypriot Fighters has a major role to play in this scenario. Instead of defending our borders shoulder to shoulder with our troops, they are an obstacle, though they claim that they support the troops. This is the part of the duty they accepted to carry out. They are spectators of the border incidents.

On the other hand, the lackeys of the Greek Cypriots consider it their duty to accuse our soldiers, who rendered our borders inviolable, and their supporters of shouting war cries. We know all these. We will not remain a spectator to this deceitful plot."

And it concludes: "We will not hand over our freedom neither to the deceitful Greeks nor to the Denktash family. We will struggle to our last drop of blood so that the TRNC will live forever.

It should not be forgotten that... Cyprus is Turkish and shall remain Turkish." (MY)

[06] Pseudostate participation in international Trap and Skeet competition

KIBRIS (5.9.96) reports that the so-called Trap and Skeet team of the pseudostate will be leaving for Germany to take part in the International Trap and Skeet Championship to be held in Berlin between 7 - 9 September.

KIBRIS reports that sportsmen from Germany, Denmark, Poland, Hungary, Belgium and the Czech Republic will also be taking part in the championship. (MY) EF/SK ------------------------------
