[01] Britain's David Hanney meets Denktash

Before the meeting, Sir David replied to reporters' questions. He said that the aim of his visit is to learn the views and stands of the two sides in connection with the Cyprus problem. He said that he does not want to (?comment) on the contacts he is holding in either side. He said: "I want to remain close to the information because the contacts I am holding here are important."

Sir David stressed that he did not bring any plans or proposals. He explained that his visit is being conducted within the framework of the UN Secretary General's goodwill mission. He pointed out that Britain does not want to start a new initiative outside this framework, but merely to contribute to the efforts to resolve the problem. He noted that the United Nations, the United States, and the EU are trying to bring about progress toward the solution of the Cyprus problem. He said that all the ideas proposed for a solution are on the negotiating table, adding that the set of ideas and the confidence-building measures are still on the agenda.

The British diplomat said that a solution is possible only if it involves a comprehensive agreement. Such a solution, he said, is possible only through the joint efforts of the two sides. The solution to the Cyprus problem will be found by the two sides.

During his remarks, Hannay said that he does not want to talk about the essence of the Cyprus problem. He pointed out that he came to Cyprus only to listen to the two sides talk about the problem, and that he will come again in July to hold contacts in a more detailed and broader framework.

Asked how he links the EU with the solution to the problem, Sir David said that the Cyprus problem and the process of joining the EU mutually affect each other. He concluded by saying that his country wants to see the problem resolved.

Also speaking before the meeting, Rauf Denktash said that the Turkish Cypriots will benefit from the experience of Sir David, an experienced diplomat from the United Nations.

Attending the meeting were Atay Ahmet Rasit, "Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense," "Presidential Adviser" Necati Munir Ertegun, and British High Commissioner David Madden.

[02] UN statement on shooting criticized by Turkish Cypriot side

The UN statement, which was issued by the UN spokesman, noted that the incident occurred in the buffer zone and that Turkish Cypriot soldiers prevented UN soldiers from taking the (word indistinct) of the Greek Cypriot soldier.

KIBRIS also reports that a high level delegation headed by Ayfer Yilmaz will be visiting the occupied area between 6-10 June. (MY)

The chairman of the committee, Ozker Ozgur, said that at the end of their investigation they will present their findings in report and submit it to the so-called parliament's General Assembly. (MY)

[05] Soyer expresses sorrow over the killing of the Greek Cypriot soldier

He said that he shares the sorrow of the murdered soldier's family and that of the Greek Cypriot community. He called on the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to sit around a negotiation table with a view to finding a mutually acceptable solution so that no more Greek or Turkish Cypriot youth's blood is shedded on this soil.

Soyer said that the incident which happened on the eve of the Ghali-Denktash meeting is a sad event. He also urged to put into practice the package of the confidence-building measures. (MY)

[06] Ambassador Boucher pays farewell visits to Turkish Cypriot party leaders

Ambassador Boucher will leave Cyprus on 12 June, and will take up a new post in Hong Kong.

After the end of his visits, answering a relevant question Ambassador Boucher said that the USA will continue its efforts regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem.

He said that they aim at securing progress regarding the solution efforts. (MY)

According to State Statics Institute officials, annual inflation as of May reached to 73.3 percent in wholesale prices and 82.9 in consumer prices.

The inflation of recent five months is 39.9 percent in wholesale and 33.3 percent in consumer prices. (MY)
