[02] Greece quakeAn undersea earthquake off the western Greek island of Lefkada injured at least 15 people and damaged homes at the height of the area's main tourist season. The quake measures six point four on the richter sale and occurred at eight fifteen in the morning local time, 14 km under the sea. Ionian Islands regional government leader Tasia Kanelopoulou said some homes on Lefkada had been damaged. Residents of nearby islands told Greek television that the quake was also felt in their locations including Cephalonia, just a few miles south of Lefkada. In 1953 an earthquake flattened all buildings on Cephalonia and killed many inhabitants. The quake was felt as far away as Athens and also on the popular tourist island of Corfu, about 80 km north. There was no damage or casualties reported on Corfu. Lefkada is one of the biggest Ionian islands, just a few miles off Greece's western coast, and has a population of about 22,000. Some 300 km northwest of Athens, it is connected with the mainland by bridge and is a popular tourist resort. [03] Customs UnionThe illegal customs union between Turkey and the pseudostate aims at preparing the Denktash regime economically, so that when a solution is reached it will be be in line with European directives. According to diplomatic sources in Ankara, that spoke to the Turkish English language daily, Turkish Daily News, the decision was reached following the denial of the Turkish government to reach an agreement with the illegal regime for use of the occupied ports and airports for exports. The same sources say that following the partial lifting of restrictions on free movement, the occupation authorities are expected to announce more measures. Regarding the exports of agricultural products, the sources noted that this will be the subject of a separate deal.[04] Talat DenktashThe leader of the Turkish Republican Party Mehmet Ali Talat warned Turkish cypriots who follow Rauf Denktash, that destruction awaits them. He also accused Rauf Denktash of deceiving illegal settlers because he just views them as potential votes, while, as he said, with the implementation of the Anan plan, there will be no discrimination between Cypriots and settlers. The Turkish cypriot politician expressed the certainty that the illegal elections in the occupied territories scheduled for September will be won by those who want a solution to the Cyprus problem and accession to the European Union. Meanwhile, Mustafa Akkintzi, the leader of the turkish cypriot Movement For Peace and Democracy, accused Rauf Denktash of turning a blind eye and not seeing that as of May 2004 there will be free trade between Cyprus and Turkey.[05] Mideast wrapIsraeli troops today killed a Palestinian militant commander, triggering vows of revenge in increasing signs that a six-week-old truce critical to a new peace plan could collapse.Fresh violence since an army raid last week that killed two Hamas militants and prompted two avenging Palestinian suicide bombings on Tuesday has overshadowed diplomacy to prevent the U.S.-orchestrated "road map" plan from unravelling. Witnesses in Hebron, a West Bank stronghold of Muslim militants, said Israeli troops surrounded a building in search of Mohammad Seder, local head of Islamic Jihad's armed wing, touching off a gunfight followed by explosions in the premises. A senior Islamic Jihad official said a body found at the house was that of Seder. Israeli military sources said as the operation began that Seder was wanted on suspicion of organising a car-bomb attack and that they were trying to arrest him. An organisation closely affiliated with the Islamic Jihad warned that the response will be quick, like an earthquake and in the depth of the Zionist entity. [06] US SaddamA senior U.S. commander said he had good reason to believe Saddam Hussein was around his hometown of Tikrit and would be caught "sooner rather than later".Colonel James Hickey, commander of the 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division, which is leading the hunt for Saddam in the area around Tikrit, said the ex-president's support base was eroding and he was moving in ever-diminishing circles. Hickey declined to elaborate on what information U.S. forces had, but said close analysis of that intelligence combined with logic indicated Saddam was near Tikrit, which sits on the banks of the Tigris about 160 km north of Baghdad. Saddam is now into his fifth month on the run after the U.S.-led invasion toppled his government on April 9th. [07] Liberia marinesU.S. Marines landed aboard nine helicopters at the airport in Liberia's capital as part of a force to back up West African peacekeepers in the divided city. The Pentagon has said that some 200 Marines from a 2,300-strong task force on three warships off Monrovia will deploy over the next few days to help regional peace efforts now pariah leader Charles Taylor has gone. A U.S. security official said a company of about 120 Marines would deploy to secure the airport, while a small reconnaissance team headed down towards rebel-held areas of the city with West African peacekeepers. Liberians would welcome a big American force on the ground. But Washington, with heavy commitments elsewhere and mindful of the bloody debacle its forces suffered in Somalia a decade ago, is reluctant to get sucked into another potential African quagmire. [08] Lotto ItalyOne lucky gambler won Europe's biggest-ever jackpot on Wednesday, pocketing nearly 66 million euros and ending an almost six-month Italian lottery drought.Italy's lottery officials did not name the person who had correctly picked the six numbers in Wednesday's Super Enalotto but said the winning ticket had been bought in a bar in the northern Italian town of Veduggio con Colzano, near Milan. The day before the six-number draw, ticket sales in Italy had been up 25 percent from a week ago as lottery fever reached fever pitch after 44 draws without a winner. The mania reached overseas too with foreigners roping in Italy-based friends to buy tickets on their behalf or even crossing the border in buses to hazard a shot at the riches. The Super Enalotto ticket requires a minimum investment of one euro, with the chances of winning about one in 622 million. Last night, the hunt was on for Italy's new millionaire -- the first Super Enalotto victor since February, to find out what he or she will do with the cash. [09] TailerA German man of Polish origin lost his driving licence after failing an alcohol test but his dog passed with flying colours.Police in the western city of Koblenz said the 47-year-old man failed to perform any of the required actions, only to be upstaged by his West Highland white terrier who executed all of the commands given perfectly, including a 360 degree turn as his master staggered and fell. At the conclusion of the uneven contest, the supervising doctor announced, "Man: fail; dog: pass."
