[02] Clerides Hannay

The meeting, which lasted an hour, was the first in a series Lord Hannay will be holding in Nicosia.

President Clerides and Lord Hannay discussed the UN-led talks on the Cyprus problem.

Also present were Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides, Attorney General Alecos Markides and British High Commissioner to Cyprus Lynn Parker.

After the working breakfast, Lord Hannay met with Mr. Kasoulides and was later received by House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias.

He then crossed into the Turkish occupied areas of the island for a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Lord Hannay will depart from the island this afternoon.

Tomorrow, US State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston is expected to arrive on the island.

The meetings of Lord Hannay and Mr. Weston are being held in view of Friday's meeting in Paris between UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, President Clerides and Mr. Denktash.

[03] Denktash

In an interview with Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper "Kibris", Mr. Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriot side aimed at keeping all they had since 1963 and at giving the Turkish Cypriots some rights through a new constitution, so that the island could accede as a whole to the European Union.

Mr. Denktash also reiterated the necessity of the Turkish occupation regime continuing its cooperation with Ankara, so that it could accede to the European Union along with Turkey.

He also stressed that Cyprus must show the utmost degree of alertness and constraint in order to effectively tackle any obstacles that may arise.

Mr. Vassiliou told CyBC that Cyprus would accede to the European Union and noted that the decision of the "15" on enlargement would not change and that there were no thoughts about postponing enlargement.

[05] The Victorians

In his book "The Victorians", acclaimed biographer A.N. Wilson alleges that Victoria's mother, Princess Victoire of Leiningen, had a lengthy affair with her Irish-born secretary Sir John Conroy and that he, rather than Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, was Victoria's real father.

Buckingham Palace said it would not comment on the allegation.

Wilson based his argument partly on medical data, the newspaper said.

Records show that the illness porphyria -- a hereditary disorder of body metabolism -- once ran in the Royal Family, but there is no evidence that Victoria carried it or passed it to her descendants.

Wilson also writes that Victoria was a carrier for the disease haemophilia, although medical records tracing her mother's ancestors for 17 generations show no evidence of the disease, suggesting Victoria inherited it from Conroy.

[06] Weather

A moderate sea breeze of four to five beaufort is expected over moderate seas.

Temperatures will reach 32 degrees inland, 30 along the coast and 23 over the mountains.

Tonight will be clear.

Winds will be westerly to northwesterly, light, two to three beaufort, over slight seas.

Temperatures will drop to 20 degrees inland, to 21 along the coast, and to 14 over the mountains.

The fire hazard is extremely high in all forest areas.
