[01] HEADLINES

-- The United States and Turkey are putting pressure on Greece on the terrorism issue.

-- Russia today geared up for the arrival of its 3,600 peacekeeping troops in Kosovo sending air traffic controllers and equipment to the Serbian province.

And,

-- George Papadopoulos, who led a military junta which tortured and jailed thousands Greeks from 1967 to 1973, died in hospital today after a long fight with cancer. He was 80.

[02] KATHIMERINI PLAN

According to the daily newspaper Kathimerini, the US are promoting a plan to resume the Cyprus peace talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

It also said the US and Britain are working on the territorial issue using a map which provides for the return to the Greek Cypriot side of a significant part of the Turkish occupied north of Cyprus, including Famagusta.

The plan also foresees the start of the talks with an exchange for Turkey becoming a candidate member for accession in the European Union.

If the talks begin, then special attention should be given to involve the Turkish Cypriots in the accession process.

[03] TERRORISM GREECE

With co-ordinated actions, Americans are demanding from Athens to re-establish the Anti-Terrorism Service and to amend the legislation while Turkey has asked Greece, in a letter by its Foreign Minister, to start a dialogue on terrorism.

According to a Turkish Foreign Ministry statement, Ankara has officially proposed to Athens to hold a high level meeting to discuss the issue.

A good opportunity for a first discussion on the issue is the forthcoming meeting in New York by the ministers of Greece and Turkey during the framework of the UN meeting in Kosovo.

[04] YUGO

NATO has vowed not to give anything to help Yugoslavia's reconstruction, only humanitarian aid, while President Slobodan Milosevic remains in power.

Underlining the tension remaining in Kosovo, a worker for an international organisation and an interpreter were shot dead overnight in Pristina.

Spokesman Louis Garneau told a news briefing he could not provide any more details on the victims' identities.

[05] KASHMIR/INDIA

Air Force Group Captain D.N. Ganesh told a news briefing that starting from two days ago, taking advantage of meteorological conditions, they have commenced round-the-clock attacks, intended to increase the pressure on the enemy.

India is waging a ground and air offensive in the disputed region against hundreds of infiltrators it says are Pakistani army regulars and Islamic mercenaries.

[06] PAPADOPOULOS DEAD

Papadopoulos, an army colonel, led a military coup in April 21, 1967 which toppled the government of Panagiotis Kanelopoulos, and ruled Greece until November 1973 when he was deposed as self-appointed president by the armed forces.

With the restoration of democracy in Greece in 1974 and the turkish invasion of Cyprus, he was sentenced to die by firing squad for treason but later ordered to spend the rest of his life in jail.

Papadopoulos had designed the 1974 coup in Cyprus which paved the way for the Turkish invasion which resulted with the occupation of the island's third.

Papadopoulos said he never regretted his role in the coup in Greece and Cyprus.

[07] CHRISTOFIAS PAPAPETROU OCCUPIED

A delegation from the Communist party AKEL, chaired by its General Secretary, Demetris Christofias, as well as United Democrats Vice President, Michalis Papapetrou crossed over to the occupied areas.

Democratic Party General Secretary, Andreas Erotocritou also attended the meeting.

The parties were invited by RTP leader, Mehmet Ali Talat.

Addressing the meeting, the AKEL Central Committee said dialogue between the two communities is a prerequisite if we are to achieve a viable solution to the Cyprus problem.

AKEL said the dialogue should be substantive, taking place within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.

It called on Turkish Cypriots to co-operate in achieving a Cyprus settlement.

Addressing the meeting, United Democrats Vice President Papapetrou said that despite the principle role of Turkey, his party considers Turkish Cypriots as a very significant factor.

He said the international community should persuade Turkey to attend the forthcoming negotiations on Cyprus with good will to find a solution which will set aside the deadlock and open the road to a bizonal federation.

[08] PEDHOULAS MUSEUM

In a speech, Mr Avraamopoulos assured of Greece's support to Cyprus.

The museum carries Byzantine icons which date between the 13th and 20th centuries.

Earlier today, a memorial service was held at the Timios Stavros Cathedral for the people of Pedhoulas who were killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion.

[09] FRENCH GRAND PRIX

Heinz-Harald Frentzen, whose only other career win was for Williams in 1997, was an unexpected winner and he emerged victorious while still suffering from the serious leg injuries he suffered in the Canadian Grand Prix two weeks ago. He came home 11 seconds clear of second placed defending world champion Finn Mika Hakkinen driving a McLaren in a race that saw several changes of the lead. Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was third in a Stewart.

[10] WEATHER

Winds will turn to moderate sea breezes, four to five beaufort and the sea will be moderate. Temperatures will rise to 32 C inland, 29 C on the coasts and 20 over the mountains.
