[01] A single ballot paper of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot MEP
candidates for Euro-elections, says Interior Minister
The Minister of Interior, Mr Andreas Christou, has stated that Turkish
Cypriots would be able to exercise their electoral rights in the June 2004
European Parliament elections but not separately as a community since the
acquis communautaire was not applied in the Turkish-occupied areas due to
the ongoing division and occupation. Instead, as the Permanent Secretary of
the Interior Ministry Mr Kyriakos Triantafyllides explained in his
intervention on the matter, a single ballot paper would be used for the
elections with no distinction made between Greek Cypriot and Turkish
Cypriot MEP candidates. "Provided that the publicised decisions of the
Subcommittee, set up by the National Council to examine the matter, are
confirmed, Cyprus will be a single region for the purpose of the Euro-
elections and there will be one ballot paper", Mr Triantafyllides
said. He further said that there would be two kinds of electoral registers,
one for Cypriots - Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots - and one for
citizens of other EU member states who were living in Cyprus.
Mr Triantafyllides expressed certainty that the Election Service of the
Interior Ministry would be ready to take all the necessary measures to
prepare for the elections as soon as the political decisions on the matter
were finalised.
[02] Attorney General holds talks in Germany on recovery of stolen Cypriot
antiquities
The Attorney General of the Republic, Mr Solon Nikitas, paid a two-day
visit to Munich, Germany, on 8 September, for talks with German officials
on the recovery of the stolen Cypriot antiquities which had been found by
the Bavarian police at the flat of the Turkish illicit dealer in antiquities
Aydin Dickmen. During his stay, the Attorney General visited the place
where the antiquities were kept and was assured that all measures were
taken for their protection and preservation.
Mr Nikitas had a meeting with the Attorney General of Bavaria, to whom he
underlined how significant it was for the Cyprus Government and the Church
to see the stolen antiquities returned to Cyprus. He also met with the
lawyers representing the Cyprus Republic and the Church in Munich and
discussed with them details of the case, including the specific procedures
to be followed for the recovery of the antiquities.
[03] Interior Minister to attend ministerial meeting on regional planning
in Slovenia
The Interior Minister, Mr Andreas Christou, departs today for Slovenia, to
attend the 13th European Conference of Ministers responsible for Regional
Planning (CEMAT), of the Council of Europe, to be held on 16-17 September
in Ljubljana. During the Conference, special emphasis will be given on the
promotion of sustainable spatial development, and the European Ministers
are expected to adopt a declaration pledging their government's commitment
to integrate the principles of sustainable development in their national
policies and ensure that these are applied on a European-wide basis.
