[01] Foreign Minister holds high-level contacts at UN Headquarters

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Georgios Iacovou, who is in New York for high-level contacts, met yesterday at the UN Headquarters with the President of the UN General Assembly, Mr Jan Cavan, to discuss the Cyprus problem and the island's accession to the European Union. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mr Iacovou noted that the Cyprus problem was still on the General Assembly's agenda and it would remain there until a settlement was reached. The Cyprus Foreign Minister also met with the representatives of the five permanent member states of the UN Security Council. He later told the press that he had informed his interlocutors on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem, making specific reference to the violation of the status quo ante by the Turkish occupation forces at the village of Strovilia. He added that the forthcoming Security Council resolution for the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was also discussed, noting that the permanent members of the Security Council assured him they would review the draft text of the resolution. Today, Mr Iacovou is expected to meet with the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, and the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Mr Alvaro de Soto.

[02] Information for the relatives of Turkish Cypriot missing persons

In accordance with the decision of the Council of Ministers taken on April 30, 2003, the families of Turkish Cypriot missing persons, the names of whom were published in the Official Gazette of the Republic number 3713 of 12 May 2003, can have access to the information in the hands of the competent services of the Republic of Cyprus in connection with the investigations that have been carried out so far concerning the fate of their missing relatives and the possible results. Meetings between the relatives of Turkish Cypriot missing with competent government officials may be arranged in Cyprus at the Office of the Greek Cypriot Representative on the Committee on Missing Persons, tel 22305794 and 223057595, or in case where the relatives are living abroad, they can apply to the Diplomatic/Consular Missions of the Republic of Cyprus. In the course of the briefing that will be made, interested relatives may also give all necessary ante mortem information concerning the case of their relative, as well as blood samples for the creation of a bank of genetic material, which will greatly assist the efforts for the scientific identification of the remains through the DNA process and their return to interested families. It should be noted that for 201 of the 500 cases included in the list of Turkish Cypriot missing details and information about the death and burial place of these persons have been given in the framework of the implementation of the July 31, 1997 agreement on missing persons to the Turkish Cypriot representative. The cooperation of the relatives of missing persons is indispensable in the efforts to solve this humanitarian problem and for this reason interested families are strongly urged to give their help and cooperation.
