[01] UN Chief discusses Cyprus developments with Special Adviser

According to a statement issued after the meeting, Mr. Annan "is encouraged by the generally positive reaction to his plan that is emerging, and wants to press ahead with the parties in accordance with the calendar which is part and parcel of the plan and which is designed to take advantage of the opportunity that is available now."

"They discussed steps for engaging the parties intensively in the next week or so. The Secretary-General looks forward to receiving their substantive reactions with a view to moving ahead in earnest.

The Secretary-General will also remain in contact with the Prime Ministers of Greece and Turkey on the matter, and his Special Advisor will return to the region to continue his consultations", the statement read.

Invited to comment, upon his encounter with the press before the meeting, on the fact that Mr. Denktash had not yet replied on whether he accepted or not the solution plan as a basis for negotiation and how that would affect the 12 December deadline, Mr. Annan stated the following: "I think it's too early to say."

"As you know, unfortunately Mr. Denktash has health problems and is in New York and has indicated he needed a bit more time for consultations and I hope that we will be getting some more definitive remarks from him after he has consulted", he added.

The Government wishes also to extend its genuine sympathy and deepest condolences to the families of the victims, to all those injured during the attack and to the Government and the people of Israel.

At the same time, the Government of Cyprus wishes to reiterate and stress that any resort to violence not only undermines the peace process but, on the contrary, aggravates and exacerbates an already tense situation.

Once again we call upon both sides to do their utmost not only to overpower the extremists, but also take all the necessary measures and disarm them as well.

It has been demonstrated that a substantial number of the Israelis and the Palestinians want to live peacefully next of each other and in conditions of security, stability and prosperity, one more reason for all of us to assist in any way feasible the resumption and the successful conclusion of the Middle East peace process.

Cyprus is fully committed to the dialogue among the protagonists, so that the area is transformed into one of peaceful coexistence and prosperous cooperation, not only for the present generation but, above all, for all those who will inherit it as well.
