[01] Both sides hope for a solution before December, says Jacques Poos

The European Parliament's Rapporteur on Cyprus' accession to the European Union, Mr. Jacques Poos, said that during his contacts in Cyprus he became aware that both communities on the island hoped for a prompt solution to the Cyprus problem, before the Copenhagen European Council in December.

Mr. Poos, who met yesterday with the President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides, underlined that his visit to Cyprus took place at a "crucial period" in the country's EU accession course and at a "very delicate phase" in the UN-led direct talks between President Clerides and Mr. Denktash.

The EP Rapporteur also pointed out that the hope and desire of the EU was to accept a united island and that, in the next few weeks, "with hard work, much effort and spirit of conciliation that has to govern the interlocutors, and with the help of their friends and with European assistance, we would be able to reach an agreement". "This agreement would have to be compatible with the provisions of the UN, the EU and the human rights", Mr. Poos added.

[02] Cyprus Foreign Minister continues with contacts in Paris

The Cyprus Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides, continued yesterday with his contacts at the French capital.

Mr. Kasoulides had a working breakfast with Ms. Pascale Andreani, Advisor on European affairs of the French Prime Minister Mr. Jean-Pierre Raffarin, with whom he discussed the EU enlargement process, Cyprus' accession course in light of the Copenhagen European Council and the latest developments in the efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

He later met with French MPs and answered their questions regarding the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' EU accession course.

The Cyprus FM also gave an interview to the French daily "Le Monde".

[03] Greek PM briefs political leaders on Cyprus

The Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Costas Simitis, briefed yesterday in separate meetings the Greek political leaders on the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus problem and Cyprus' EU accession course.

Speaking after the meetings, Mr. Simitis warned that in the next few weeks or months "we might be called upon to make some critical choices" and called for national unity to promote the common goals, namely the solution of the Cyprus problem, Cyprus' accession to the EU and the creation of a climate of peace and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.
