[01] President Clerides: Cyprus' full accession to the EU will be realized within the set timeframes

"We envision a united Cyprus, with one sovereignty, one international personality and one citizenship. We are searching for a solution that will ensure the human rights and the basic freedoms, will be harmonized with the acquis communautaire and will be in accordance with the principles of international law and the UN resolutions", the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides said, delivering a speech at the First International Conference of Overseas Cypriot Youth and the nineteenth annual meeting of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA) which is currently being held at the Hilton Hotel in Lefkosia.

Referring to the direct talks on the Cyprus problem, President Clerides stressed that: "Unfortunately, until today, no substantial progress has been achieved, because the Turkish side insists on the recognition of two sovereign states. We expect that the international factor will intervene more substantially with a view to finding a solution before Cyprus' EU accession. If, however, the Turkish side remains intransigent, the absence of a solution will not influence our accession course; a course which is entering its final stages and we expect that its completion, with our full accession to the EU, will be realized within the set timeframes", he added.

In conclusion, President Clerides thanked the participants for their support in the just struggle of the Cyprus people. He also praised their contribution in the efforts to raise the awareness of the public.

The President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias also addressed the Conference.

[02] State of California Assembly and Senate jointly resolve for reunification of Cyprus and its accession to the EU

The Assembly and the Senate of the State of California adopted a joint resolution for the reunification of Cyprus and its accession to the EU. Resolution No. 48, which was adopted by the Assembly on 10 June 2002 and by the Senate on 8 August 2002, was introduced by Assembly Member Lou Papan.

The Resolution calls upon the President of the United States to "increase the administration's efforts to encourage initiatives that will help promote and achieve reunification, reconciliation, stability, and prosperity in Cyprus within the context of the ongoing efforts under the United Nations Secretary-General's auspices and on the basis of the relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions".

It further resolves that the Assembly and Senate of the State of California jointly request the United States government to "continue to strongly support the accession of Cyprus to the European Union, without a settlement of the Cyprus problem being a precondition for accession".

[03] Greek Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs: Nothing can stop Cyprus' EU accession course

"Nothing can stop Cyprus' EU accession course; the preparations that have been made and the relevant decisions that have been taken by the competent European bodies clarify this fact. However, this optimism should not let us rest assured. We must continue to work towards our common goal, parallel to the solution of the Cyprus problem based on UN decisions."

This statement was made by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Mangriotis following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides on 23 August 2002.

Replying to a press question whether new proposals for the settlement of the Cyprus problem may upset Cyprus' EU accession course, Mr Mangriotis stated: "The Greek, as well as the Greek Cypriot sides, always wish for the solution of the Cyprus problem, based on the framework that has been set out by the international organizations. All our efforts aim at such a solution, and we are ready to deal with every eventuality"

Mr Mangriotis is currently on an official three-day visit to Cyprus to attend the nineteenth meeting of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee - Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA).

Mr Mangriotis was also received by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Glafcos Clerides.

[04] Credentials of new Cyprus Ambassador in China

Ambassador Mr Petros Kestoras presented, on Thursday 22 August, his credentials to the President of the People's Republic of China, Mr Jiang Zemin, as the new Ambassador of Cyprus in China.

In a private meeting with the Chinese President after the ceremony, Ambassador Kestoras referred to the friendly ties that exist between the two countries and expressed the hope for their further enhancement. The Cyprus Ambassador then thanked President Zemin for China's support for the struggle of the Cyprus people to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the UN resolutions.

President Zemin underlined the friendly diplomatic ties between China and Cyprus, which date back thirty-one years, and reassured the Cyprus Ambassador of China's continuous support.
