[01] Cyprus protests against Turkish violations of its airspace

Cyprus' Charge d' Affaires to the United Nations Mr George Kasoulides protested to the UN Secretary General against

new massive violations of Cyprus' national airspace and Nicosia's FIR by Turkish warplanes, which took place between 3-5 April, 2002 .

In his letter, which was circulated as a UN official document, Mr Kasoulides strongly protested against these actions which violate International Law and UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus.

The Cypriot diplomat points out that violations are occurring at the time of the ongoing direct talks in Cyprus, at the invitation of the Secretary- General, in the exercise of his mission of good offices entrusted to him by the Security Co7uncil in its resolution 1250 (1999). Let us not forget that the Security Council, in its recent statement of 4 April 2002 following an interim report by Alvaro de Soto, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, expressed concern for the slow progress of the negotiations and urged that all issues should be resolved as part of a comprehensive settlement, which takes full consideration of relevant United Nations resolutions and treaties, Mr Kasoulides added.

It is hoped that the Government of Turkey will show restraint and will cease the violation of the airspace of the Republic of Cyprus and contribute to the efforts to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of United Nations resolutions, Mr Kasoulides concluded.

[02] US Congressman urges Bush to increase his involvement on Cyprus peace talks

US Comgressman Frank Pallone sent a letter, dated 24 April 202 , to the US President George Bush urging him to increase his involvement in the peace negotiations presently taking place over the 28-year conflict in Cyprus. In his letter, Mr Pallone requestd President Bush to apply pressure on the Turkish side and in particular on the Turkish Government so that they convince Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to alter his current uncompromising stance.

" I am confident that the leadership of the Republic of Cyprus will continue to negotiate in good faith until a comprehensive settlement is reached, as they have tried to do all along, Pallone continued in his letter. " I hope, with a little pressure from your Administration on the decision makers in Ankara, that the Turkish Cypriot leadership will respond by putting aside its unreasonable and unacceptable demands, and negotiate in good faith", Pallone added.

The United States has a significant security, economic and moral interest in seeing that a settlement is soon achieved, US Congressman concluded

The letter was sent after a meeting a meeting of Mr Pallone with Cyprus House of Representatives President Mr Demetris Christofias, last week in Washington.
