[01] Gathering of Turkish Cypriots opposing to Mr Denktash's policy

The Turkish Cypriot Democratic Association in Britain presented at a gathering on 17 November 2001 its annual communique. The Association publishes its annual communique as an act of protest for Mr Denktash's policy and as a way of demonstrating their support to a federal solution to the Cyprus problem with the ending of Turkey's interference in shapping the future of the Turkish Cypriots. The slogan which is printed at the back of the communique "This country is ours-hands off" is indicative of the organisation's beliefs.

The 2001 Annual Communique reads, inter alia, as follows:

The Turkish Cypriot Democratic Association:

Reaffirms its full commitment to global peace and understands that in the current state of international affairs Cyprus is not high on the UN agenda;

Considering the prevailing de facto division of the island and witnessing the imminent annexation of 'northern Cyprus' to Turkey and contraction of Republic of Cyprus into an even smaller state in 'southern Cyprus' and being seriously concerned with the looming danger of armed conflict or even war over and on Cyprus;

1. calls on the International community to remain alert and urges their respective governments, in particular the UK, to give genuine and substantive support to an early federal solution under the UN peace initiatives.

2. calls upon and urges the UN, EU, UK, Turkey and the Greek Cypriot Community to give recognition and respect the Turkish Cypriot Community as one of the two equal communities of the UN endorsed Federal State of Cyprus AND to pursue dialogue and give support to peace and democracy campaigners AND to encourage inter communal contacts at all levels without restrictions and prohibitions;

3. promotes Cyprus accession to membership of the European Union as a united, bi-communal,bi-zonal Federal State of Cyprus;

4. supports the EU-Cyprus accession negotiations to be concluded on the basis that Cyprus to become EU member should not be the 'Divided State of Cyprus' but the 'United Federal State of Cyprus';

5. urges the EU Commission not to be content with the exclusion of the Turkish Cypriot Community but to encourage, support and where possible facilitate their involvement and participation in the Cyprus accession;

6. persistently demands that the issues of 'Solution' and 'EU Membership' be submitted for approval by the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots in separate referendums.

[02] Cyprus ratifies and signs the Council of Europe's Conventions

Cypriot Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, Ambassador Christoforos Yiangou, submitted on 21 November 2001 the Ratificaiton Document of the Convention of the Recognition of Qualifications concerning Higher Education in the European Region in the presence of the Council of Europe's Secretary General.

The Convention aims at facilitating the recognition of qualifications acquired in one European country by another, facilitating European students to study and work abroad. This convention is the first joint convention between the Council of Europe and UNESCO.

Mr Yiangou on the same date signed the European Landscape Convention as well.

[03] Reduction in tourist arrivals by 10%

According to the official statistical data, tourist arrivals in the month of October have decreased by 10% in relation to last year's data. This reduction had been foreseen in the framework of the expected developments following the 11th September events.

Tourist arrivals for the period of January-October 2001 reach 2.514.391 representing an increase of around 2,5% compared to the same figures in relation to last year's arrivals.

In the meantime, following the personal contacts of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Nicos Rolandis, with tourist agents in the UK and Germany as well as with the Directors of the CTO offices abroad, measures for the support of tourism have been prepared in cooperation with all relevant actors and they will be announced at the latest by 15 December 2001.
