[01] Presentation of Credentials

The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides received yesterday at separate formal ceremonies the credentials of the new High Commissioner of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mr Khalid M. Mir and the new Ambassador of Algeria Mr Ahmed Boudehri.

Presenting his credentials the new High Commissioner of Pakistan said that his government "is committed to endeavour for the further enhancement of bilateral understanding and cooperation not only in the mutual benefit of Pakistan and Cyprus, but also for the peace, progress and prosperity of the international community".

"Pakistan and Cyprus are linked together in various international organizations as well as in strong bonds of friendship and fraternity," MrKhalid said, adding that his mission will be to strengthen these bonds with President Clerides' wise guidance and with the valuable support of the Government of Cyprus.

Presenting his credentials the new Ambassador of Algeria expressed his government's wish to work for the development of friendly relations between Algeria and Cyprus and the enhancement of cooperation in many fields, to the benefit of the people of both countries.

[02] Kuwait does not accept the foreign occupation in Cyprus

The Cyprus - Kuwait Parliamentary Friendship Group, which is currently on an official visit to Cyprus at the invitation of the House of Representatives, had a meeting yesterday with the President of the Foreign Affairs Parliamentary Committee Mr Nicos Anastasiades.

During the meeting, Mr Anastasiades briefed the Kuwaiti parliamentarians on the Cyprus problem and the island's EU accession course, stressing that, despite the painful concessions made by the Greek Cypriot side for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, the Turkish side remains intransigent and hardens its position more and more. Characteristic of this stance is the refusal of the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Denktash, to respond to the United Nations Secretary General's invitation for the resumption of the UN peace talks.

The head of the Kuwaiti delegation Mr Mubarak F Al-Duwaila said that the solution of the Cyprus problem must be based on the United Nations resolutions and stressed that his country does not accept the foreign occupation of Cyprus and its consequences. Finally, he expressed the wish that the accession of Cyprus to the European Union would assist in the solution of the Cyprus problem.
