[01] Elections for municipal and local elections will take place in December 2001

Election for municipal and local authorities will take place in Cyprus on December 2 and 16, respectively, Interior Minister, Mr Christodoulos Christodoulou had stated on 30 July.

Speaking after a meeting on election issues, Mr Christodoulou had said that polling for the election of school boards and the Pancyprian Refugees Committee will take place on 9 and 16 December respectively.

Mr Christodoulou had noted that several issues had to be sorted out with regard to the December elections to avoid any possible confusion or problems.

Referring to elections for the Turkish occupied areas of the island, he had said that constituents of those areas would elect their Municipal authorities but elections for local authorities to elect community leaders will probably not take place.

Mr Christodoulou had explained that the terms in office of community leaders in the island's occupied areas would probably be extended by the said months to a year.

The minister had said more meetings on the December elections will take place to ensure that everything is in order on polling day.

[02] Measurements to record the electromagnetic emissions

Cypriot experts from various government departments will conduct measurements to record the electromagnetic emissions from an existing telecommunications antenna in the British Base of Akrotiri, Bases' Spokesman, Mr Robert Greenwood had stated on 30 July.

The measurements begun today and will last for three days.

The Bases' Spokesman had said members of the British Bases will escort the Cypriot experts and will be monitoring the measurement process.

He had added that the Bases' authorities are sufficiently sure that there are no health risks from the antenna's emissions, adding that there's nothing secretive.

The government of Cyprus decided to repeat the measurements taken some time ago in a way that would ensure secure results. For this purpose it has sought the assistance of foreign experts from Europe.

The issue arose when Britain had decided to erect a 100-metre high antenna in Akrotiri and preparatory construction work on the site sparked violent protests by local residents, which left about 30 people injured and many vehicles burnt.
