In view of this, he was visiting Bahrain to explain the positions of the Cyprus government on the Cyprus issue and to promote bilateral relations between Cyprus and Bahrain. Mr Kasoulides expressed the belief that there was no visible danger for the recognition of the illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus. He explained that the Government had received information that messages of the Turkish propaganda had gained ground in Islamic countries and together with Greece launched an intensive diplomatic campaign to tackle the Turkish diplomatic attack. The US and Britain were also making interventions to counter the Turkish propaganda, he said. [02] Finance Minister in Ireland for talksCyprus Finance Minister Mr Takis Clerides, who is currently on an official visit to Ireland, had a meeting yesterday with his Irish counterpart Mr Charlie McCreevy. During the meeting, the two ministers discussed the economic situation in their respective countries and the implementation of the Protocol of Cooperation on the harmonization with the acquis communautaire signed by Cyprus and Ireland in 1999. They also exchanged views on issues of EU taxation, a sector in which the Irish experience could be very valuable to Cyprus. While in Dublin Mr Klerides met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Enterprises, Commerce and Employment Mrs Mary Harney with whom he discussed issues of further developing commercial and economic relations between the two countries. Mrs Harney welcomed the progress made by Cyprus in its EU accession course, and stressed her country's positive approach to the island's anticipated accession to the European Union.. Mr Klerides, who is heading a trade delegation, also addressed a seminar aimed at promoting Cyprus as a business centre. He outlined Cyprus' pre- accession economic programme and said relations between Cyprus and Ireland could be enhanced further since the conditions are already in place for this. The EU regrets that there is currently a standstill in the process and calls on the Turkish Cypriot side to resume the process as soon as possible. The EU reaffirms its commitment to the stability and prosperity of the Mediterranean region". [04] US Senate adopts resolution on enclavedThe United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations adopted on 12 July, a resolution on the enclaved people in the Turkish occupied area of Cyprus, which strongly urges President George Bush to undertake efforts to end restrictions on the freedoms and human rights of the enclaved people of Cyprus. The resolution underlines the US Senate's intention to "remain actively interested in the matter until the human rights and fundamental freedoms of the enclaved people of Cyprus are restored, respected and safeguarded." Moreover it cites the recent judgement of the European Court of Human Rights on 10 May 2001, which states that Turkey "is responsible for continuing human rights violations committed throughout its 27 year military occupation of the northern third of Cyprus against inter alia the enclaved people in the occupied area of Cyprus".
