[01] Cyprus problem discussed at the 40th Association Council of the EU and Turkey

The solution to the Cyprus problem will undoubtedly assist in Cyprus' efforts to join the Union, however, this is not a pre-condition for the island's accession, the Swedish Foreign Minister and President of the Council of the EU, Anna Lindh, stated during her speech at the 40th Association Council of the EU and Turkey which took place in Luxembourg on 26 June 2001.

The EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Gunter Verheugen, speaking during a press conference, stated that clearly the EU would prefer to see the solution to the Cyprus problem before the island's accession to the Union and for this reason the Union calls upon the Turkish Cypriots to participate in the proximity talks under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Greek Foreign Minister, George Papandreou, emphasized that this Association Council between the EU and Turkey is the first one to take place after Helsinki and the association partnership.

"We have managed to turn the Greco-Turkish differences and the Cyprus problem into European issues in the sense that they are included in the related discussions between the EU and Turkey by the Union itself".

[02] Colonisation of occupied Cyprus discussed at Council of Europe

The colonisation of the occupied part of Cyprus has resulted in distortion of the demographics of the area, the Rapporteur of the Committee of Migration, Refugees and Demography of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr Jaako Laakso, during a recent meeting of the committee in Strasbourg.

Mr Laakso, who was reporting on a recent visit to Cyprus, added that this was in opposition to the Cuco Report and the relevant UN resolutions and added that it would be useful if he were to pay a fact-finding visit to Turkey and the occupied part of Cyprus.

[03] Violation of the human rights of the enclaved to be investigated by Council of Europe

A discussion on the question of the violation of the human rights of the enclaved was recently held before the Committee of Legal and Human Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Mr Dick Marty, Rapporteur on the issue, briefing the Committee, requested the Committee's authorisation to investigate the matter further.

[04] Cyprus and Egypt to cooperate on the issue of petroleum exploration

Cyprus and Egypt are to cooperate in the exploration and exploitation of oil reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis, and the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum, Sameh Fahmy, are due to have talks on the matter in Cyprus in late July.

This was announced after a meeting between Mr Rolandis and the Egyptian First Under-Secretary, Mr EL Said Fuad Kasem, currently visiting Cyprus.
