Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 01-03-09Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Friday, 9 March 2001CONTENTS[01] Cyprus and Latvia sign cooperation agreementsForeign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had a meeting yesterday with the Foreign Minister of Latvia Mr Indulis Berzins, who is visiting Cyprus at the invitation of Mr Kasoulides.After their talks, the two Ministers signed on behalf of their countries cooperation agreements in the fields of culture, education, science and tourism, as well as an agreement on the abolition of visas. Speaking to the press after the signing of the agreements, Mr Kasoulides said that Mr Berzins' visit is in the framework of cooperation among candidate countries for EU accession. Cyprus and Latvia, share common characteristics, such as their relatively similar size and their parallel histories, he said. Mr Kasoulides said that he and Mr Berzins had very fruitful and productive talks during which they had the opportunity to review bilateral ties, to exchange views on both their countries' efforts to accede to the European Union and to discuss international issues of common interest. For his part, Mr Berzins said that Cyprus and Latvia's efforts for EU accession offer good prospects for cooperation between them. Cyprus has the leading position in the accession negotiations and Latvia's position is to try to accede to the European Union in the first wave of candidate countries, he said. He also stressed the importance of creating good relations with other EU candidate countries and facilitating cooperation between the people of these countries. In the framework of his visit, the Latvian Foreign Minister also had a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides and the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr Nicos Rolandis. [02] Finnish Parliamentarian meets with House PresidentFinnish Parliamentarian and Member of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Demography of the Council of Europe, Mr. Jaakko Laakso, is currently in Cyprus for an eight-day official visit.During his stay, Mr. Laakso had a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives Mr. Spyros Kyprianou who briefed him on the latest developments on the Cyprus problem, with special emphasis on the massive colonization of the occupied areas of Cyprus by Turkish settlers, through which Turkey is trying to change the demographic character of the island.
