It called for the implementation of UN resolutions on Cyprus. It expressed the hope that the on-going "proximity talks" conducted under the United Nations Secretary-General's auspices would lead to a just and lasting settlement in conformity with the United Nations Security Council Resolutions calling for a bi-zonal and bi-communal Federal Republic of Cyprus, with a single sovereignty and international personality and a single citizenship comprising two politically equal communities as defined in the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions." [03] Reference to Cyprus at UN committeeThe European Union supports the UN Secretary-General's mission of good offices in Cyprus aimed at reaching a comprehensive and viable solution based on the UN Security Council resolutions. This was stated at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly by the French representative on behalf of the European Union. [04] US Vice President Al Gore statement on CyprusUS Vice President Al Gore has said that if he is elected President of the US he will make Cyprus one of his foreign policy priorities."My administration will continue to fully support the relevant UN Security Council resolutions calling for the establishment of a bi-zonal, bicommunal federation uniting Cyprus," he said in a statement last week to the Greek- American community. He added that his administration will do all that it can to encourage the two parties on Cyprus to arrive at a comprehensive settlement that unites the island. [05] Clinton says Cyprus was one of his disappointmentsUS President Bill Clinton has said that one of the relatively small number of real disappointments that he had after eight years of working in the foreign policy field, is that he has not made more progress in helping to resolve the Cyprus issue. He added that he has always felt that Turkey should be integrated into Europe and that Turkey and Greece should be natural allies because they are allies in NATO. "To see entrenched and immovable positions in Cyprus in what really ought to be a fairly straight-forward problem to solve, keep them apart and keep Turkey more at arm's length from Europe, I think is a price not worth paying", he added. He said there was some chance a little progress could be made before he leaves office, but if not "it's something I'll keep an interest in and would be willing to keep working for".
