[01] US trademark office renews Cyprus' halloumi trademark for another ten
years
Cyprus' exclusive right to the halloumi cheese certification mark has been
renewed for another 10 year period, the Cyprus Trade Centre announced
today.
An official notice dated 22 August 2000 issued by the Patent and Trademark
Office of the US Department of Commerce grants renewal of the halloumi mark
to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus
to 10 April 2009.
Cyprus has held exclusive rights to the mark since 1990 when Danish Milk
Industry interests were barred from calling their cheese halloumi after
challenging Cyprus and instituting legal proceedings before the United
States Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). After an eight-year legal
battle, the TTAB in 1999 ruled unanimously in Cyprus' favour agreeing that
halloumi "is produced only in Cyprus using historic methods unique to that
country".
