[01] President Clinton's recent statements on Cyprus are very positive, says Kyprianou

The President of the House of Representatives Mr Spyros Kyprianou described President Clinton's recent statements on a Cyprus settlement as "very positive".

In a press conference given yesterday, Mr Kyprianou said that President Clinton's recent reference to the imperative need for the withdrawal of all Turkish troops from Cyprus is very positive. He also pointed out that his reference to the respect of human rights on the whole island is another positive element.

"As I have been informed, he said, President Clinton made no reference to separate state entities".

[02] Cyprus Ambassador presents credentials to European Union Council

Cyprus Ambassador Theophilos Theophilou presented his credentials yesterday to the Acting President of the European Union Council, Portuguese Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for European matters Mr Francisco Seixas Da Costa, as Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the EU.

Receiving the credentials Mr Da Costa expressed the wish that Cyprus will soon become a member of the EU. He welcomed the fact that Cyprus is ahead of the other candidate countries as far as the the harmonisation process is concerned, since it has concluded most of the chapters of the acquis communautaire. Mr Da Costa reassured that before the end of the Portuguese Presidency all the other chapters will be opened for negotiation.
