[01] President Clinton details his commitment to and his involvement in Cyprus settlement efforts

President Clinton made clear that he would personally monitor settlement efforts on a daily basis and, when needed, become directly involved to help bring about a just and viable settlement in compliance with U.N. resolutions that would bring security and democracy for all Cypriots. The President also displayed his deep understanding of the Cyprus issue as well as other issues in the region.

Moreover they "maintain that the solution of the Cyprus problem should be in conformity with the internationally recognised principles of international law, the purposes and principles of the United Nations, and the European acquis communautaire. In particular, the agreement should be in conformity with the European Convention of Human Rights and will safeguard the human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriots including the voluntary right of return without any discrimination."

Noting that the present status quo is unacceptable and that the "search for a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem has dragged on for too long" the Greek American organisations recall the 1992 campaign statement by President Clinton that the United States has a moral obligation as well as national security interest to see that the illegal occupation of Cyprus comes to an end, and that a Cyprus settlement must ensure the sovereign independence and territorial integrity of the state based on a democratic constitution which respects and guarantees the rights of both communities.

Moreover they note that the US "bears special responsibility to exert its considerable influence on Turkey in order to ensure that a just and viable settlement will at long last be found."

We don't think that a solution to this problem is beyond the ability of the United States", they add.

In their proclamation, the Greek American leaders equally call upon the members of the G8 who will be meeting in Japan next month to give their full and sustain backing to the negotiations. A Cyprus solution will come only when world leaders get involved in a very direct and personal way, they say.

[03] Presidential Candidates Gore and Bush commit to keep Cyprus high on American agenda

Both candidates also expressed their hope for the success of the current Cyprus settlement talks and their support for a just settlement in accordance with American urgings and United Nations resolutions.
