[01] Cyprus offers assistance to earthquake victims in Greece

Government Spokesman Mr. Michalis Papapetrou announced yesterday that the Cyprus Government will send 1 million US dollars to Greece as part of an earthquake relief package following Tuesday's earthquake in Athens.

Speaking to the press, after yesterday's Cabinet meeting, Mr. Papapetrou said that the government decided to send a seven-member team of experts to Greece to assist the relief campaign.

Mr Papapetrou also noted that President Clerides informed the Greek Premier Mr. Costas Simitis that Cyprus is ready to provide any kind of assistance, be it medical economic, material or other assistance.

[02] European Report finds Turkey guilty of gross violations of human rights in Cyprus

A report by the European Commission of Human Rights of the Council of Europe, made public today, finds Turkey guilty of gross violations of human rights in Cyprus.

The Report, which deals with the fourth application introduced by the Cyprus Government against Turkey, was adopted on 4 June 1999 and relates to the consequences of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus and Turkey's continuing violation of Articles of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the Attorney-General of the Republic, Mr Alecos Markides, said the Report was of historic importance. Mr Markides said Cyprus' application concentrated on human rights issues including the fate of the missing persons, the property rights of displaced persons and the living conditions of the enclaved Greek Cypriots.

The Commission of Human Rights unanimously adopted and reaffirmed three earlier applications by Cyprus against Turkey and the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights on the case of Titina Loizidou, Mr Markides said. In the Loizidou case the Court had held that the denial to the applicant of access to her home in the occupied northern part of Cyprus and the loss of control of her property was imputable to Turkey.

[03] Cyprus signs the Protocol to the Convention on Transfer of Sentenced Persons

Cyprus signed yesterday in Strasbourg the Additional Protocol on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons

The Protocol sets out rules applicable to transfer of the execution of sentences, firstly where sentenced persons have absconded from the sentencing state to their state of nationality, and secondly where they are subject to an expulsion or deportation as a consequence of their sentence.

The Convention is actually in force in 35 Council of Europe member countries as well as in other seven states.
