[02] P>U S. State Department Special Coordinator for Cyprus Mr. Tom Weston arrived in Cyprus last night on his first visit to the island since his recent appointment to the post.Mr Weston will be received today by the President of the Republic Mr. Glafcos Clerides. [03] P>The completion of this year's excavations at Pyrgos Mavrorachi brought to light remains of on Early Bronze Age metal workshop in the area.Almost all metallurgical activities have been identified according to the archaeological evidence (ore benefaction, washing, smelting, melting, casting and finishing). The archaeometallurgical investigations carried out on the finds have revealed traces of an early metallurgical activity based on copper ore sulphides. The presence of several furnaces, some of them devoted to smelting, and others probably intended for melting and casting, is a peculiarity of the site. The analyses on a crucible used in melting/casting operations have revealed the use of pure copper. The data coming from the Pyrgos excavation, although preliminary, throw new light on the metallurgical activity in Cyprus at the begining of the Bronze Age (Early-Middle Bronze Age). Though the period is not yet thoroughly known, these centuries were undoubtedly a focal point in Cypriote Prehistory, marked by technological innovation and development, and primarily the beginning of metallurgy.
