Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-06-08Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Tuesday, 8 June 1999CONTENTS[01] A solution to the Cyprus problem should be based on UN resolutions, says ChinaChinese President Jian Zenin said that any solution to the Cyprus problem should be based on UN resolutions,Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides reported to the press yesterday.President Clerides, who was speaking to the press after the holding of official talks with his Chinese counterpart, expressed his satisfaction with the positions upheld by Chinese officials on the Cyprus problem. The two Presidents' official talks were followed by extended discussions. During the talks, the Cypriot side stressed the need to respect international borders as it had been established by the Finland International Agreement. Another principle advocated by Cyprus was the opposition to foreign interference in the internal affairs of a country as well as to the solution of international conflicts through the use of force. At the Bejing talks Cyprus and China confirmed a convergence of views on many issues and in particular on how the new world order should be formulated in the new millennium. The two countries also expressed their wish to see their bilateral economic and trade relations further develop. [02] China reaffirms its support to CyprusChinese Foreign Minister Tang Jia Xuan, has reiterated his country's support to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Cyprus.During a meeting in Bejing yesterday with Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Mr. Xuan also said that in the case of Cyprus respect for UN principles and resolutions should be ensured.During their meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the official visit to China by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, the two Ministers discussed the Cyprus problem, current international developments and bilateral relations in the political and economic fields, as well as bilateral cooperation in international organisations. Mr. Kasoulides thanked his Chinese counterpart for his country's firm support to Cyprus and extended to him an official invitation to visit the island. [03] Exhumations start at Lakatamia military cemeteryA team of forensic experts has started examining remains of Greek Cypriots and Greek war dead, killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus.The process of exhumations of remains of war dead conducted at Lakatamia Military Cemetery is under the supervision of the team leader, Professor William Haglund. Speaking to the press yesterday, Professor Haglund said remains will start to be unearthed in an operation that will last up to six weeks.
