[01] Cyprus participates in the 5th EU Framework Programme

Cyprus signed yesterday in Brussels an additional protocol to the Association Agreement entitling its participation in the 5th EU framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration.

The programme covers the European Union policy on research and technology issues for the period 1998-2002.

The relevant protocol was signed yesterday by Cyprus Finance Minister Takis Clerides, the President of the Council of Ministers, German Education and Research Minister Ms Edelgard Bulmahn and EU Commissioner Ms Edith Cresson.

In her introductory speech, Ms Bulhmahn said that Cyprus' determination to promote its accession course is reflected in the signing of the Protocol.

She added that Cyprus participation in the programme will give the opportunity to European and Cypriot researchers and research centres to co- operate on common programmes for their mutual benefit.

Ms Bulhman also noted that Cyprus has exhibited great achievements in the fields of research and management of water resources, agriculture, genetics, information society etc.

On his part ,Cyprus Finance Minister Mr. Takis Clerides said that the agreement constitutes a challenge for Cypriot researchers, who will make every effort to utilise opportunities provided by the programme.

Mr Clerides underlined that Cyprus' accession course proceeds satisfactorily and that the coutnry's participation in the 5th Framework Programme is another step towards its harmonisation with the acquis communautaire.
