[01] President Clerides to meet Greek Premier on Tuesday

President Clerides leaves for Athens today in order to discuss with Greek Premier Costas Simitis the issue of the deployment of the S-300 missiles.

The two leaders will meet on Tuesday and examine the issue taking into consideration the positions of the islands political parties and in the light of resolutions 1217 and 1218 adopted by the UN Security Council last week.

The National Council discussed the missiles issue during an extraordinary session last Thursday and agreed that President Clerides should convey the views of Cypruspolitical leadership to the Greek Premier and further examine the issue.

[02] Britain will work for full implementation of resolution 1218 on Cyprus

British Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed last week his countrys commitment to working for full implementation of resolution 1218 on Cyprus.

In a statement issued on 23 December the British Premier said that he strongly endorses resolution 1218 passed by the UN Security Council and called on all the interested parties to co-operate with the UN Secretary General and his Deputy Special Representative in a constructive and flexible manner and to secure progress on the issues it identifies.

Moreover Mr Blair expressed the wish to see a major, sustained effort towards securing a just, comprehensive and lasting settlement in Cyprus and added that his government will give complete and whole-hearted backing to this effort.
