He expressed his governement's satisfaction at the approval of Resolutions 1178 and 1179 by the Security Council and its support for UN efforts to achieve a just and lasting solution based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation. He stated his government's strong support for Resolution 1179 and called upon the Turkish Cypriot side to cooperate with the Secretary General. "In this regard, we strongly support Resolution 1179 on the need for the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities to commit themselves to serious negotiations to resolve the Cyprus dispute. In light of our most recent efforts, we call on the Turkish side to cooperate with the Secretary - General and his Special Adviser, Mr. Diego Cordovez, in their efforts to promote a comprehensive settlement". [02] New UN Deputy Special Representative for Cyprus assumes office next weekDame Ann Hercus, the new Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary - General for Cyprus, will take up her position on Monday 6 July.According to a United Nations press release, Dame Ann Hercus will arrive in Cyprus on Friday, 3 July and is scheduled to hold a press conference at the Ledra Palace in Nicosia on her first day at work. Prior to assuming office, Dame Ann will have "private consultations" on July 4 with the UN Chief's Special Adviser for Cyprus, Diego Cordovez, who is also expected to arrive in Cyprus on Thursday 2 July. The purpose of the meeting is "to continue the exchange of views they began when they met in New York in early June". Dame Ann Hercus is replacing Mr. Gustave Feissel who has been in Cyprus for 15 years. She was New Zealand's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN from 1988-1990. Before that, she was a member of Parliament from 1978 - 1987 and Minister of Social Welfare, Police and Women's Affairs from 1984 to 1987. At present, she is an international consultant to, inter alia, the UN and the Commonwealth. [03] Cordovez arrives tomorrowThe Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary General in a statement to the press on 29.6.98 confirmed that the Secretary General's Special Adviser for Cyprus Mr. Diego Cordovez will arrive in Cyprus tomorrow and will have separate meetings with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.The President of the Security Council Portuguese Permanent Representative Mr. Antonio Monteiro, commenting on Mr. Cordovez visit, pointed out that the Security Council encourages all parties concerned to help Mr. Cordovez in his mission, and expressed the hope that this time "we may have some specific results". [04] Cyprus - Poland Shipping Agreement enhancedCyprus and Poland signed a protocol yesterday, amending a shipping agreement which was signed between the two countries in 1984.The protocol adds a new clause for a parallel registration of ships and replaces two articles of the Agreement to include new identity documents for Polish sailors and the new Polish competent authority, after recent political changes in Poland. Moreover it simplifies administration and customs procedures and forbids ships to enter closed ports. [05] Transport StatisticsThe Transport Statistics annual report for the year 1997 has been published by the Department of Statistics and Research.The report provides detailed information on the economic developments of the broad Transport, Storage and Communications Sectors as well as data on the registration of motor vehicles by type and category, road accidents and shipping and aviation activities.
