For the first time 25 Greek parachutists were dropped from C-130 aircraft to participate in the exercise southeast of the capital Nicosia. Four Greek navy vessels and a submarine were also anchored near Cypriot ports. Tuesday's exercises were watched by President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides and the political and military leadership of the island. Speaking to reporters President Clerides said: "We shall continue to strengthen the National Guard, a strong National Guard and the Joint Defence Doctrine will remain in existence, unless the Turkish occupying Attila forces decide to withdraw peacefully from the island". "Nikiforos" ended officially Wednesday (9.10.1996) with a military parade in the town of Larnaca, where President Clerides took the salute.
