[02] House President discusses regional developments with Ambassador of KuwaitCNA - CYPRUS/Nicosia 25/10/2016 15:43Demetris Syllouris, President of the House of Representatives, met on Tuesday with the Ambassador of Kuwait to Cyrus Waleed Ahmad Al-Kandari and discussed with him regional developments. According to an official press release, Syllouris and Al-Kandari reaffirmed the very good relations between Cyprus and Kuwait both in the political and the economic fields and they expressed their mutual will to further upgrade bilateral ties. They also stressed their common will to promote closer cooperation between the Parliaments of the two countries in the immediate future. [03] Cyprus has one of the lowest percentages of ICT experts in the EU, Eurostat saysCNA - Athanasios Athanasiou - Belgium/Brussels 25/10/2016 15:51Only 8,100 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts were in Cyprus, in 2015, up from 7900 in 2010. However, their percentage remains one of the lowest in the EU (only 2.2% as percentage of total employment). According to Eurostat, in Cyprus 82.9% of ICT professionals are men and in total 71.2% of them had tertiary education. 47.7% are aged less than 35, broadly following the European trend. Meanwhile, in the European Union (EU), nearly 8 million persons were employed in 2015 as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) specialists, representing 3.5% of total employment. This profession continues to be largely made up of men, accounting in 2015 for more than 8 ICT specialists out of 10 employed in the EU (83.9%). [04] EP: Commission must set up mechanism to monitor fundamental rights in EU statesCNA - Athena Arsalidou - FRANCE/STRASBOURG 25/10/2016 15:50The EU Commission should set up a binding EU mechanism to monitor and report annually on the EU countries` records in democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights, Members of the European Parliament said today in a resolution they approved at the plenary session in Strasbourg. The EP`s resolution aims to bridge the apparent gap between the monitoring in EU candidate countries and the lack of effective tools vis-à-vis those that are already EU member states. The MEPs said in their resolution that this mechanism should include objective benchmarks and lay down a gradual approach to remedying breaches.
