  • [01] Island-wide strike in the construction industry

Workers in the construction industry in Cyprus go on strike Thursday and Friday.

Trade unionists of SEK, PEO and DEOK, said in a press conference that the strike aims to protest against the lack of measures on behalf of the employers to protect their jobs.

"The strike will take place since for three years now, employees are being fired and replaced with cheap labour which exceeds today 10,000 in the construction industry" a joint statement by the trade unions says.

[02] Ireland pledges to work very hard for an MFF deal

Ireland will work very hard to clinch a deal on the Multiannual Financial Framework 2014-2020 (MFF), during its EU presidency, the country's Ambassador in Nicosia Patrick Scullion has told CNA in an interview, pointing out that a fair agreement, albeit imperfect, will help the EU move forward.

In his interview, the Ambassador encouraged Cyprus to work with the Troika on a bail out deal in order to get back into the markets as soon as possible.

He also praised the work of the Cyprus EU Presidency, describing it "a very successful first Presidency" and saying that Nicosia, among other achievements, did "stellar work" on the MFF negotiations and delivered the Limassol Declaration, which is a political declaration that looks to re-energise the EU's Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP), five years after its initial launching in Lisbon.
