[01] Results of survey of adults skills presented
Cyprus differentiates and is below the international and European average
in language skills, mathematical and technological literacy, according
to the results of the Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC).
The Survey was conducted in 33 countries within the period 2008-2013 and
measures the key cognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals
to participate in society and for economies to prosper. The evidence
from this Survey will help countries better understand how education
and training systems can nurture these skills.
Educators, policy makers and labour economists will use this information
to develop economic, education and social policies that will continue to
enhance the skills of adults. The Minister of Education and Culture
Kyriacos Kenevezos, speaking on Wednesday in a press conference on the
results PIAAC, said the survey is a programme of the Organisation of
Economic Co-operation and Development that conducted for the first time.
[02] Six stolen Post-Byzantine icons recovered by the Church of Cyprus
Six Post-Byzantine icons, that were stolen from churches in the occupied
part of Cyprus, after the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974, will
be repatriated.
The icons were found at P. Von Culmer art gallery, in Augsburg, Germany,
in December 2010. They are the icons of Saint Photini of 1811, Saint
Panteleimonas of 1812, Apostle Andreas of the 18th century, Apostle
Markos of the 18th century, Agios Panteleimonas of 1854 and the icon of
"Vaiforos" of the 18th century.
According to a press release issued by the Representation of the Church
of Cyprus to the European Union there have been indications that these six
icons were part of Turkish art dealer Aydin Dikmen's Cypriot loot. Dikmen
has looted dozens of churches in the Turkish occupied part of Cyprus.
