  • [01] Defence Minister to pay an official visit to Slovakia

    Defence Minister Photis Photiou will pay an official visit to Bratislava at the invitation of his Slovak counterpart Martin Gilvac.

    According to an official press release, the two Ministers will have a tete a tete meeting on Thursday, that will be followed by talks between delegations of the two countries.

    Issues related to the bilateral relations of the two countries in the field of security and defence, as well as the ways to further deepen cooperation between the Defence Ministries will be at the focus of discussions.

    [02] Remains found in Turkish occupied village, probably of Greek Cypriot missing

    Exhumations have begun in the Neo Chorio village in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, where it is believed that six Greek Cypriots are buried, who have been missing since the Turkish invasion in 1974.

    In statements to CNA, the representative of the Greek Cypriot side at the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) Theofilos Theofilou, said that the remains of unknown people were found in the village while construction work was taking place in the area.

    Theofilou was invited to comment on information in the Turkish Cypriot press, which said that exhumation work has begun in the Neo Chorio village.

    He said that as soon as the CMP was informed about the presence of remains in the area, a team of archaeologists went to the site and began exhumation work. A DNA test will then determine the identification of the remains.

    Theofilou said that the remains are from six people, probably Greek Cypriot missing.

    [03] President Anastasiades briefs permanent Security Council members

    President Nikos Anastasiades explained his proposals to initiate and successfully conclude negotiations on Cyprus, to the five permanent Security Council members, in a working lunch on Monday.

    The President explained to the 5 Ambassadors the triptych of his proposal, which concerns the good preparation of the talks, the more active involvement of the EU and the return of Famagusta.

    According to a diplomatic source, all members demonstrated understanding of the proposal on Famagusta and agreed with the importance of good preparation.

    The President sent the message that despite the economic crisis in Cyprus, he will not accept any solution that does not comply with the resolutions of the Security Council

    [04] Anastasiades - Biden meeting on Friday

    President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades will hold a meeting on Friday with US Vice President Joe Biden.

    The meeting take place upon an initiative of the US official.

    [05] Minister: Difficult year for tourism, but damage minimized

    Although 2013 has been a difficult year for Cyprus' tourism, timely interventions on behalf of the government have minimized the damage caused after the March Eurogroup decision on Cyprus, Minister of Tourism Giorgos Lakkotrypis has said.

    Addressing the 59th Annual General Assembly of the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA), the Minister said that 2013 was "a difficult year for tourism" explaining that although initial data suggested a good year, Eurogroup's decision on Cyprus in March 2013 has influenced the tourism sector.

    However, he pointed out that the timely and decisive intervention on behalf of the government has minimized the damage caused by Eurogroup's decision and tourism reservations returned to normal.
