  • [01] Greek Ambassador: Turkish occupation of Cyprus is unacceptable

The fact that Cyprus is the only partly occupied European country "is totally unacceptable and cannot be tolerated," Greek Ambassador in Nicosia Vassilis Papaioannou has said.

He also stressed "our determination to put an end, once and for all, to the anomaly of the occupation of the northern part of Cyprus by the Turkish troops and achieve a final and viable solution to the Cyprus problem."

Addressing an event organised by the Embassy and the Archbishopric of the Church of Cyprus, on the occasion of the Cypriot presidency of the EU, Papaioannou referred to "the successful management of the EU presidency by Cyprus" and noted "the unacceptable refusal of the candidate Turkey to establish contact with the actual rotating presidency, instead of benefiting from such an occasion."

[02] There is a need for a real economic and monetary union in the EU, Mavroyiannis says

There is a need for a real economic and monetary union in the European Union that should be based on four pillars, the banking union, the fiscal union, the economic union and the political union, Deputy Minister to the President for European Affairs Andreas Mavroyiannis has said.

Mavroyiannis also said that this four pillar Union should be based on democratic legality and accountability.

In his address to the 48th Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) that took place in Nicosia, Mavroyiannis said that the goal of the Cyprus Presidency is to keep the strict time schedule set by the European Council for reaching an agreement on the Single Monitoring Mechanism by the end of 2012, as well as to ensure the quality of legislation, because the issues are complex and very important.

[03] Cyprus and Estonia sign agreement on the avoidance of double taxation

Cyprus and Estonia signed in Luxembourg, the "Convention Between the Government of the Republic of Cyprus and the Government of the Republic of Estonia for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion With Respect to Taxes on Income".

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia.

[04] Event on road safety aimed to set new Guinness World Record

The Traffic Department of the Police, the Ministry of Education and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority organised at the Police Road Safety Park on Monday an event on road safety, titled "1000 helmets 1000 children" in an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record on the use of cycle helmets helmets, but mainly to raise children's awareness on road safety issues.

Addressing the event, Minister of Loucas Louca said that defensive and careful driving must become an everyday practice, especially for the young people, who are the majority of the victims of road accidents.

Communication and Works Minister Efthimios Flourentzou said that Cyprus, a European member state, has proceeded to the scientific planning of its strategy, policies and actions on road safety that will be implemented until 2020. He also noted that Cyprus aims to reduce deaths and injuries as a result of road accidents by half until 2020, compared to the figures recorded in 2010.

[05] EU reinforces its sanctions against Syria and Iran

The EU has reinforced its sanctions against Syria and Iran during the Foreign Affairs Council, in Luxembourg. Cyprus was represented at the Council by Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis.

Speaking at a press conference, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, who chairs the Council, said that given the intensifying violence in Syria, the Council reinforced EU sanctions against the Syrian regime. She said that the Council added 28 persons responsible for the violent repression against the civilian population to the list of those subject to a travel ban and an asset freeze.

At the same time, two additional entities were targeted with a freeze of their assets in the EU.
