[04] First Trauma Registry of the Mediterranean in Cyprus

Traumas from accidents have become an epidemic of the century, since they constitute the main reason for limited life expectancy and are the main cause of death in children and young people, according to Cypriot Professor Demetrios Demetriades, Director of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at the LAC+USC Medical Center of the University of Southern California (Los Angeles County + University of Southern California).

In an interview with CNA to mark the recent official announcement about the creation of a Trauma Registry on the island, he said Cyprus is the first among the countries of the Mediterranean area which has created a Trauma Registry.

"Trauma is the medical epidemic of our century. It should not be regarded as an unpredictable event that cannot be tackled. It can be prevented and when it happens it can be addressed appropriately", he said.

He noted that in the past two decades traumas have been the number one cause of death in young people under 35 years, they are responsible for two thirds of deaths in children under 15 years and more responsible for the loss of potential life years than heart diseases and cancer combined.
