  • [01] Omirou: We look forward to a more active EU role in Cyprus issue

    The House of Representatives looks forward to a more active EU role in the efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus issue, House of Representatives President Yiannakis Omirou has said.

    In statements to the press on the occasion of Europe Day on Wednesday, Omirou said the House commemorates the day, adding that the EU has been a great achievement of the European people in their effort to promote the principles of freedom, democracy, peace, human rights, prosperity and social cohesion.

    "European integration has being the source of hopes and expectations for European people and European societies", he noted.

    However, Omirou added, Europe finds itself in the midst of an economic crisis both in the Eurozone, of which Cyprus is a member and in all other EU member states.

    [02] Health Minister participates in a seminar in Brussels

    Health Minister Stavros Malas participated in a seminar titled "Horizon 2020" for research and innovation in EU in the period 2014-2020.

    According to an official announcement, the European Parliament will deal with the structure and content of the new financial programme for research and innovation in the EU from 2014 to 2020 during the next couple of years. The negotiations for this programme will be intensified during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, due to begin on July 1st.

    During his stay in Brussels, Malas held tet-a-tet meetings with the Members of the European Parliament Maria Da Graca Carvalho, Teresa Riera Madurell and Philippe Lamberts, rapporteurs for the several legislative proposals of the programme "Horizon 2020".

    Malas exchanged views on issues that the Cyprus Presidency will deal with on research and briefed them on the targets and issues that the Presidency will promote.
