  • [01] Brok urges Turkey to investigate Diyarbakir missing persons claim

President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, Elmar Brok, has called on Turkey to provide information as to whether the remains found in the grounds of Diyarbakir prison belong to Greek Cypriots missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

Following an intervention by activist and MEP Eleni Theocharous, Brok has sent a letter to the Permanent Representative of Turkey in Brussels, urging him to provide information and carry out an investigation of the issue following the discovery of the 38 skeletons in the Diyarbakir grounds.

According to a press release from Theocharous' office, Brok is asking the permanent representative to investigate the conditions of death, the origin of the dead and information on the investigation currently underway.

Brok said that the Cypriot MEP told the Foreign Affairs Committee that the remains might belong to Greek Cypriots as more than 200 prisoners of war were transferred to Diyarbakir after the Turkish invasion of 1974. She also pointed out the significance of gathering as much information as possible.

[02] President meets Ismir Chamber Chairman

President Demetris Christofias has received Chairman of the Ismir Chamber of Commerce Ekrem Demirtas, who said he gave the President suggestions on how the economy could contribute to the solution of the Cyprus problem, without elaborating on these proposals.

In statements following the meeting, Demirtas said that many Turkish ``serious investors`` would want to invest in a reunited Cyprus following a settlement.

Demirtas recalled that he met President Christofias in 2010, noting that as a businessman he met with many leaders but ``very few had influenced him as Christofias,`` as he noted.

Asked whether there are Turkish investors who wish to cooperate with Cyprus in and what fields, Demirtas said he expects that many Turkish businesspeople would like to invest in various fields such as tourism, constructions and in the financial sector in united Cyprus under a federal roof.

[03] Poland hopes for reunification of Cyprus

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has expressed hope that a viable and functional solution to the Cyprus problem will be found, reunifying the island and its people the soonest possible.

Receiving the credentials of Cyprus` new Ambassador to Poland Andreas Zinonos, Komorowski also said his country was willing to offer assistance to Cyprus during the Cypriot Presidency of the EU.

Zinonos congratulated Komorowski for Poland`s successful EU Presidency, and an exchange of ideas followed on various issues expected to concern the Cypriot EU Presidency.

Furthermore, Zinonos briefed the Polish President on developments in the Cyprus problem and assured that the Greek Cypriot side was ready to continue talks for a settlement during the EU Presidency.

[04] Increased checks on goods from occupied areas

Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Sophocles Aletraris has announced that the checks for goods arriving from occupied areas, under the Green Line Regulation will be increased in an effort to ensure the quality of public health.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, after a meeting he had with all the governmental services in charge, Aletraris said that currently a number of 15 sample checks are taking place per year, adding that the new decision provides for 40-50 checks annually.

Replying to a question, the Minister said that it is not easy to determine whether these goods were indeed produced in the occupied areas and were not brought there from Turkey.

He explained however that according to the EU Regulation, if there is such a suspicion, the European Commission proceeds with further checks.
