  • [01] ENERGY COMMISSIONER

Energy issues during the Cypriot presidency of the EU Council, as well as after the destruction of Cyprus main power plant of Vassilikos last July following a deadly blast in a nearby naval base, were discussed during a meeting held Thursday in Nicosia between Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Praxoulla Antoniadou and EU Commissioner for Energy, Guenther Oettinger.

In his statements after the meeting, the EU Commissioner said they discussed their common agenda on energy issues during the Cypriot EU presidency - in the second half of 2012 - as well as all preparations needed to be done.

He added that it is also important to see what has to be developed and what is developed to hold security of supply of electricity in your wonderful country after the accident (in Vassilikos). Now we will go to the area visiting the plants and speak about development investments and new production capacities and maybe how the EU can help in several ways as an advisor and maybe to co-finance some investments from our EU budget.

In addition, he noted that EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn, responsible for structural funds, visited Cyprus shortly after the deadly explosion in the naval base, adding that he needs my advice in the energy investment sector.

The Commissioner said that during the meeting they discussed about how to implement the internal energy market package in Cyprus legislation and what is special in Cyprus as an island - and energy island - as well, and what can be done to integrate Cyprus in the EU market and more in the regional neighborhood and what can be done to come to more sustainable renewable energy and storages for electricity.

Invited to comment on Turkish actions and threats since Cyprus began exploration for natural gas in its Exclusive Economic Zone, the Commissioner said that this issue is addressed in a bilateral context with everybody.

In her statements, the Cypriot Minister said that the EU Commissioner is very much interested in Cyprus priorities as regards the field of energy during the six months of its rotating presidency of the Council of the EU.

She added that Commissioner Oettinger showed interest in knowing about the consequences after the destruction of Cyprus main power plant in Vassiliko, in July.

Antoniadou said the Commissioner was informed about Cyprus actions to ease the impact of the accident in Vassiliko on the country and he spoke about the EU role in solving Cyprus energy problems.

He expressed his interest in the prospects of the area in the field of energy, especially as regards EU plans for infrastructure development in the area that would secure Europes energy security, she noted.

    [02] AUSTRIA - CYPRUS EEZ

Austria recognizes the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus to undertake exploratory drilling operations in the area of its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) as well as to exploit these resources.

This was underlined by Austrian Ambassador in Nicosia, Martin Weiss, invited by CNA to comment on recent Turkish aggression against Cyprus` right to explore and exploit any hydrocarbon reserves in its EEZ.

``The legal situation is quite clear: Austria recognizes the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus to undertake exploratory drilling operations in the area of its exclusive economic zone as well as at a later stage to exploit these resources``, he stressed.

The Ambassador recalled that Cypriot President Demetris Christofias ``has made it repeatedly clear that the Turkish Cypriot community too will benefit from the exploitation of natural gas in a reunified Cyprus``.
