  • [01] HEALTH MINISTER - INNOVATION

Minister of Health Stavros Malas will be presiding over a meeting of experts on Wednesday in Brussels on issues of innovation in the health sector.

According to a press release, Cyprus, at the initiative of the Minister, has undertaken to draft a strategic plan for the incorporation of modern innovation in health systems on a European level.

The plan will be presented at a conference to be held in Cyprus in the framework of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU, and will be part of the conclusions of the Ministers` Council.

The conference on collaborative innovation in health and the EU strategy up till 2020 will be attended by senior officers of the European Commission, state officers from member states, large companies active in all health fields, and researchers.

    [02] NATURAL GAS - DRILLING

Drilling for natural gas in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone will go ahead as scheduled and the process is to start October 1, perhaps even a week earlier, Director of Energy Service at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Solon Kassinis told CNA on Wednesday.

The drilling is scheduled for October 1, we might be able to start maybe a week earlier, Kassinis said, underlining that Cyprus Government is acting on the basis of the international law; we have even conducted environmental studies on the matter. He also emphasized that not only Greek Cypriot but all legal residents of the country are to benefit from the findings.

Kassinis explained that the whole drilling process will take approximately two months and it will determine both the quantity and quality of the natural gas. At the same time, he explained, we will thoroughly discuss the way we will transfer the gas, if it will be transferred via a pipeline, how big this pipeline will be, who is to be involved in the procedure and whether we will be able to export it via a liquefaction plant.

According to Kassinis, a meeting between the new Minister of Commerce Praxoulla Antoniadou and Noble Energy officials is to take place on the 18th, in order to discuss all these matters among others.

    [03] CYPRUS` EEZ - TURKEY

The government, through Acting Government Spokesman Christos Christofides has rejected recent positions and actions by Ankara on Cyprus delineation of its Exclusive Economic Zone and welcomed statements by Washington on the matter.

Invited to comment on reports that Ankara is exerting diplomatic pressure in an effort to avert the start of the exploration of Cyprus hydrocarbon reserves, Christofides said that Cyprus EEZ was implemented through difficult conditions and constitutes perhaps one of the most important positive developments for the island in the recent years.

The agreement to exploit possible reserves at the well known block 12 is the Republic of Cyprus sovereign right, which has ratified the international convention on the Law of the Sea, something which Turkey has not done and whatever we do, we do it in the framework of international law and our sovereign rights, he added.

He also said the government believes that finding hydrocarbon reserves and the positive economic and political repercussions of this would constitute a powerful motive towards the Turkish Cypriot side to cooperate effectively for a proper solution to the Cyprus issue the soonest.
