[01] EU INTERIOR MINISTERS - IMMIGRATIONA Ministerial meeting will take place Tuesday in Cyprus with the participation of EU Ministers from the six Mediterranean states, which are faced with disproportionate mass immigration flows. EU Ministers from Cyprus, Greece, Malta, France, Spain and Italy, responsible for immigration issues, will gather in Nicosia on April 19th, at the invitation of the Minister of the Interior Neoclis Sylikiotis.The Nicosia meeting will focus on the situation in North Africa and the Middle East and immigration flows which exert disproportionate pressure on the six EU Mediterranean countries. According to an official press release, the meeting will discuss the need for a comprehensive management of immigration flows in the EU framework, based on the principle of solidarity among EU member states. During the meeting, the Ministers will put forward common proposals in a Joint Communique, which will then be submitted to the next EU Council of Justice and Interior Ministers. [02] FM - INDIA - VISITForeign Minister Markos Kyprianou pays a visit to India, during which he will review bilateral relations and ways to further develop cooperation between Cyprus and India.The Foreign Minister will be received by the Vice President of India and President of the Upper House of Parliament, Hamid Ansari and will also have a meeting with his Indian counterpart Shri S.M. Krishna. Kyprianou will brief Mr Ansari and Mr Krishna on the current phase of the direct negotiations on the Cyprus problem, which aim at reuniting the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. EU - India relations as well as other international and regional issues of mutual concern will also be discussed, including the latest developments in the Middle East and Northern Africa. [03] PRESIDENT CYPRUS WINE COMPETITIONThe annual Cyprus Wine Competition sends a message of optimism that local wine production can actually find its place high on the world wine map, President Demetris Christofias has said.Addressing a gala dinner organized to mark the 6th Cyprus Wine Competition, in the southern coastal town of Limassol, President Christofias said that the wine-making sector in Cyprus is going through a transitional period, having to adjust to new circumstances, but noted that any problems faced in the wine industry are being dealt with. President Christofias said that serious efforts are being made, through long lasting strategies, to resolve any problems that could hinder the evolution of a healthy and sustainable wine making sector. Addressing the 6th Cyprus Wine Competition event, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Enviroment, Demetris Eliades, said the government has a strategy which aims to upgrade the quality and enhance the competitiveness of the wine sector to the best benefit of the economy, the wine producers and the consumers. [04] FINMIN - CORPORATE TAX - EUThe government and the Finance Ministry are making continuous efforts to avoid great challenges and traps which may come from the EU, in relation to a proposed increase of corporate tax in Cyprus, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis has said. A possible corporate tax increase of the existing 10% rate ``would be destructive to our economy... we have many foreign companies which are registered and operate in Cyprus, enjoying low tax rates,`` Stavrakis said, addressing a gathering on Value Added Tax. ``This is a position which the government will defend and fight for with all its strength,`` Stavrakis added. Concerning the economy, Stavrakis said that the 1.7% growth rate projected by the IMF`s World Outlook 2011 compared with the Finance Ministry`s more conservative estimates for a 1.5% growth rate is satisfactory.Cyprus News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
