Greek Foreign Minister Demetris Droutsas has stressed that an objective approach to the question of Cyprus is a necessary prerequisite for the continuation and a positive outcome of the ongoing peace talks for a political settlement. He also pointed out that the UN-led peace talks, between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, must be based on what has been agreed between President Christofias and Eroglus predecessor.

Droustas noted that some circles in the international community tend to embellish the views of the Turkish Cypriot community, and in particular those expressed by Eroglu, while they take for granted the constructive proposals President Christofias puts forward at the talks. The Greek FM outlined this position to his British counterpart William Hague, who according to reliable sources, attributes particular importance to the views expressed by Athens.

Droutsas and Hague also discussed Turkeys EU accession course, with the former pointing out that Ankara has to meet its EU obligations, if it wants its path to Europe to continue. Greece, Droutsas said, continues to support Turkeys EU aspirations, just as Cyprus does because this European course will benefit the peace effort in Cyprus.
