[01] UN - UNFICYP - RESOLUTIONThe UN Security Council is expected to approve a resolution on the renewal of the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), having secured the consent of the government of the Republic of Cyprus.Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, Ambassador Minas Hadjimichael, met on Monday Ambassador Suzan Rice, the US Permanent Representative to the UN and acting President of the Security Council. Hadjimichael told Rice that the government had given its consent to the renewal of UNFICYPs mandate for another six months until June 2011. The resolution on the renewal of the mandate is expected to be adopted during an open session of the UN Security Council, which will begin later today. Turkey, a non permanent member of the Security Council whose troops occupy Cyprus` northern part since they invaded in 1974, is expected to vote against the resolution. Ankara does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus. UNFICYP, comprising 859 military personnel from about seven troop contributing countries in addition to 68 personnel, arrived in Cyprus in March 1964 after inter-communal fighting broke out. The mandate of the force is renewed every six months by the Security Council. UNFICYPs mandate is to contribute to the restoration of normal conditions and entails the facilitation of an increasingly wide range of civilian activities.
