[01] UN - UNFICYP - RESOLUTION

Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations, Ambassador Minas Hadjimichael, met on Monday Ambassador Suzan Rice, the US Permanent Representative to the UN and acting President of the Security Council.

Hadjimichael told Rice that the government had given its consent to the renewal of UNFICYPs mandate for another six months until June 2011.

The resolution on the renewal of the mandate is expected to be adopted during an open session of the UN Security Council, which will begin later today.

Turkey, a non permanent member of the Security Council whose troops occupy Cyprus` northern part since they invaded in 1974, is expected to vote against the resolution. Ankara does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

UNFICYP, comprising 859 military personnel from about seven troop contributing countries in addition to 68 personnel, arrived in Cyprus in March 1964 after inter-communal fighting broke out. The mandate of the force is renewed every six months by the Security Council.

UNFICYPs mandate is to contribute to the restoration of normal conditions and entails the facilitation of an increasingly wide range of civilian activities.

[02] CMP - DONATION - GRATITUDE

A press release issued by the Committee said that ``this renewed donation will enable the CMP to pursue its project on the Exhumation, Identification and Return of Remains of Missing Persons into 2011.``

To date, human remains representing over 750 individuals have been exhumed while over 260 missing persons have been identified and returned to the families concerned. The CMP is aiming to locate, exhume, identify and return as many remains as possible in order to bring an end to the uncertainty which has affected so many families for so many years.

[03] GREECE - STRIKE - FLIGHTS

Spokesman for Cyprus` airports Adamos Aspris said that due to the strike ``all flights to and from Greek airports are postponed.``

``These are Cyprus Airways, Olympic Air and Aegean flights. Specifically, 26 flights, of which 12 are departures and the other 14 arrivals, will be affected,`` he added. He explained that ``all cases concern flights to and from Larnaca International Airport, to and from the airports of Athens and Salonica.``

``The affected airlines have already changed their schedule, so travelers are requested to contact the airlines and travel agents directly,`` Aspris said. Replying to questions, Aspris said that Wednesday`s strike will affect about 4,500 passengers.

[04] BUSINESSES - GRANTS

At a ceremony organised in Nicosia by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce (KTTO), the first edition of the bicommunal Business Directory 2011 was presented.

Speaking at the ceremony, CCCI President Manthos Mavrommatis congratulated the businesses that received grants and expressed hope that they would soon have positive results. Referring to the ``Economic Interdependence`` programme, he said that economic interdependence between the two communities exists and constitutes an important factor for both communities, especially during a financial crisis.

KTTO President Gunay Cerkez said the ``Economic Interdependence`` programme supports businesses in both communities, adding that it would also contribute to the reunification of Cyprus. Referring to the financial crisis, Cerkez said the Cypriots in both communities have a way of overcoming crises, and expressed certainty that they would overcome the financial crisis.
