  • [01] CYPRUS - ISRAEL`S FIRE-FIGHTING EFFORTS

Cyprus contributes to Israels efforts to contain a huge forest fire close to the northern city of Haifa, which has killed at least 40 people and forced mass evacuations.

The fire-fighting airplane from the Forestry Department and the police helicopter are in Israel.

Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis told CNA the government is ready to send land forces also, provided Israel can send a military transport aircraft C130 to transfer the forces and firefighting vehicles.

The situation seems to be difficult to deal with, the Minister added.

On Thursday afternoon, he said that Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu and Cyprus President Demetris Christofias had a telephone conversation about the fire.

Sylikiotis talked also to the Secretary of National Security in the Cabinet Office and the head of civil aviation in Israel. He noted that Israel has also asked for help from Greece, Russia and Italy.

    [02] UN - UNFICYP RESOLUTION - DELIBERATIONS

Deliberations continue between the five permanent members of the UN Security Council on the British draft resolution, in view of the renewal of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate.

A second draft resolution is expected on Friday, while deliberations are expected to continue until Wednesday morning at the level of permanent members. Unofficial deliberations will commence on Wednesday afternoon at the Security Council plenary.

The US Presidency of the Security Council, announcing the schedule on Thursday, said a meeting will take place on Friday between the Security Council and the representatives of the countries contributing with personnel to UNFICYP.

The next discussion has been scheduled for Wednesday, where there is a possibility for the members to be briefed by Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Cyprus Lisa Buttenheim.
