  • [01] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS ISSUE - PROPOSALS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has called on the Turkish side to show a spirit of cooperation and accept the proposals he has put forward, noting that those proposals will facilitate negotiations for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Addressing an event in Nicosia to honour the victims of World War II, President Christofias pointed out the necessity for unity among political forces, in order to show the people and the international community that ``Cyprus must and can be reunified on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation, with political equality, as defined in UN Security Council resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international identity.``

He added that the proposals he put forward for a solution prove that ``our side is a step ahead in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem,`` and that ``the way our proposals were received internationally is at least encouraging.``

``We once again call on the Turkish side to show a spirit of cooperation and flexibility, and accept these proposals, which will substantially facilitate the negotiations and the atmosphere in which they are being held,`` he said.

President Christofias also referred to those who fought to defend the principles of freedom, democracy and dignity, and assured that the state would continue to support World War II veterans.

    [02] DOWNER - CYPRUS TALKS

The UN Secretary Generals Special Advisor in Cyprus Alexander Downer has said that if the two leaders find important convergences on the property question, this would be a very important step forward in the Cyprus negotiations.

Speaking after a meeting he had with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias at the Presidential Palace, Downer said that the UN are looking forward to the leaders meeting on Friday, and importantly the two full-day meetings that are going to take place next week. Its going to be an interesting period when we discuss the property question, he said.

Asked if the UN are expecting both leaders to submit proposals on the property issue, Downer noted that this is a matter for the leaders to talk about how they are going to handle the talks.

What we would say publicly about all of these, is that we very much want the two sides to continue to work and move forward on the property question. If they can, as we sometimes put it break the back of the property issue and find some really important convergences, then this is going to be a very important step forward in the Cyprus negotiations. We hope what happens over the next ten days or so, make a contribution to that, he pointed out.

    [03] CYPRUS - MOU - FRANCOPHONIE

The signing ceremony will take place in the presence of the special envoy of the Secretary General of the International Organisation of Francophonie Stephane Lopez, the Minister of Education and Culture Andreas Demetriou, chiefs of diplomatic missions in Nicosia who participate in the Organisation of Francophonie and other high ranking officials of the Republic of Cyprus.
