Speaking to a gathering to denounce the July 15 1974 military coup against the first President of the Republic, Archbishop Makarios, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece, which paved the way for the Turkish invasion five days later and the subsequent occupation of 37 percent of the Republic`s territory, Christofias reiterated that the Greek Cypriot side remains ready for an ``honourable compromise`` on the Cyprus problem, adding however that the contribution of the Turkish side is necessary.

``Despite the difficulties we face in the talks with the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, we are not disappointed and we continue to work with the same sincerity and insistence. Our will for a solution is proven. We are and we remain ready for an honourable compromise,`` the President stressed.

He pointed out however that a solution needs the contribution of the Turkish side. ``This means that the other side must show flexibility``, the President said, adding that the Turkish side`s positions should be within the agreed framework.

The President once more called on the UN, the EU and all the other countries aspiring to play a role in the efforts to solve the Cyprus problem to turn towards Turkey.

``They should exert all their influence to Ankara so that it would contribute substantively to the talks and not to confine itself to a communicational blame game,`` Christofias added, noting ``the other side`s and mainly Turkey`s desire for a solution will be manifested by the positions tabled in the talks and not by communication tricks.``

According to the President, ``Turkey should shift from non-realistic positions if we are to reach a solution as soon as possible.``

Outlining the parameters of the solution, Christofias said that this should be based ``on a single state with one and indivisible sovereignty, one nationality and one international personality as well as political equality as defined in the relevant UN resolutions,`` adding that the solution should safeguard the human rights and the basic freedoms of all Cypriots.

``I would like to underline that I will continue to work consistently based on the principles for a solution to the Cyprus problem. I will continue to work hard, putting above all the interest of Cyprus and of our people so that we could hand over to the following generations a reunited country for Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots alike,`` he concluded.

Peace talks are underway since September 2008 between the leaders of the two communities to find a negotiated settlement to reunite the country under a federal roof.

[02] GAROYIAN - WORLD CONFERENCE - SPEAKERS OF PARLIAMENT

According to an official press release, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is convening the World Conference, a global summit focusing on democracy, the role of legislative institutions and the relationship with the United Nations.

The broad theme for the 2010 Conference is ``Parliaments in a world of crisis: securing global democratic accountability for the common good``.

[03] PASCHALIDES - NATURAL GAS

In statements to the press, Paschalides said his Ministry is currently at the final stages of the negotiations concerning the selection of the natural gas provider.

He added that the Ministry is conducting detailed negotiations with a short list of companies, adding that after the selection of the provider company, the provider and the strategic investor for the natural gas terminal will be coordinated.

Responding to a question whether the project will be completed within schedule, Paschalides said the project will be completed by 2014.

[04] EUROSTAT - CYPRUS TRADE DEFICIT

Total exports reached 300 million euro, recording an increase of 12% compared to the corresponding period of 2009, whereas imports declined by 8%, compared to same period of 2009, reaching 2 billion euro.
